EA and Motive stressed that Star Wars: Squadrons would let you earn everything through gameplay, but it’s now clear that you won’t even have to consider paying more — because you can’t. In addition to Motive’s Mitch Dyer confirming that there won’t be microtransactions, the studio’s Ian Frazier has told Game Informer that Squadrons isn’t planned as a “live service” where you keep getting add-ons, whether or not they’re paid. In other words, the $40 game you buy should include absolutely everything.

Frazier didn’t rule out the possibility of more. “We could,” he said. However, that’s not the game Motive wants to present. The Star Wars space battler is meant to be “complete and great in its own right,” and anything more would be a bonus.

There are further additions if you don’t care to program your pooch. You can “potty train” your Aibo using a mapping feature, teach it to be quiet and carry it in an upright position. You can also feed the bot by using virtual coins to buy “aibocrisps,” but you’ll want to be cautious. While you’ll earn coins for free by signing into the My Aibo app, Sony also offers coins for purchase with real-world money. Yes, your robot dog now has microtransactions.

Aibo is still far from a trivial purchase at $2,900. However, the developer tools make it easier to justify if you’re the tinkering sort. You can treat it more as a project than a novelty with a fixed set of features.

To get everyone on the same page, Rocket League will convert any existing loot crates players have in their inventory to blueprints when the update goes live in December. When you launch the game, they’ll be there waiting for you to reveal what they can turn into. The one thing to note here is that you can’t trade a blueprint without first finding out what it turns into since that would go against the spirit of the new system.

Psyonix also revealed that you’ll be able to trade credits, the new premium currency you need to unlock blueprints, in certain circumstances. The main takeaway here is that you’ll be swap credits as long as only one player is offering the currency in a trade. Another important restriction is that you can’t offer credits to another player for free — you have to receive something as part of the transaction.

Decryptors, an item that allows you to open a loot crate without purchasing a key first, will be phased out as part of next month’s update. If you happen to have any decryptors in your inventory, they’ll be converted to bonus gifts, which you can open for free. Lastly, once the new in-game economy is up and running, you’ll only be able to trade in items you got for free from a post-game drop. Rocket Pass items will still be ineligible for trade-ins.

As before, Psyonix thinks the new system is fairer to players while still allowing it to monetize its game. Loot boxes have for a couple of years now been a major source of controversy since many of them don’t reveal what’s inside.

Bethesda started the microtransactions controversy on consoles with horse armor, and since 2006 it has extended to every annual sports game, Battlefield V, and anything you can squeeze a loot box system into. In just the latest controversy for Fallout 76, the company has made a decision to add an item to the game that players feel comes far to close to being “pay to win.” Once Patch 8 rolls out later today, players will be able to use “repair kits” to patch up their damaged or worn out weapons and armor instead of relying on other resources that take time and effort to gather.

While Improved Repair Kits that give your items even more power will only be available in rare drops, the basic repair kits that instantly restore an item to 100 percent health have to be bought using the game’s currency, Atoms. You can get that through gameplay, but you can also buy it with real money. As Kotaku points out, players who drop cash can not only avoid the grind of collecting materials or Atoms, they could also potentially have the edge in PvP fights by instantly fixing key weapons or armor in their Pip-Boy and continuing on almost indefinitely.
