Mike Bloomberg’s presidential campaign has been much shorter than his competitors and, so far, much louder. With a huge budget, it’s paid for posts by social media influencers as well as standard advertisements. However, the LA Times reports that on Friday, Twitter suspended some 70-odd accounts for breaking its rules against “against platform manipulation and spam.”

According to Twitter, this wasn’t just a ban impacting some full-on bots, but it wiped out accounts sending out identical pro-Bloomberg messages. One shown in the tweet read, “A President Is Born: Barbra Streisand sings Mike’s praises. Check out her tweet.” While some bans could be permanent, other accounts could be restored if the account holder verifies they still have control. According to the LAT, many of the accounts they looked at had only been created in the last few months,

A few days ago, the Wall Street Journal reported the campaign was hiring “deputy digital organizers” that might do everything from phone banking to social media posts, but if they want to keep their accounts, then they’ll probably want to vary slightly from the recommended messagin.

At the moment, Facebook doesn’t have a way to show when political posts come from paid campaigners, and CNBC’s source didn’t share any proposed solutions.

“We think it’s important that political campaigns have the guidance and tools to be transparent,” a Facebook spokesperson told CNBC. “That’s why we recommend campaign employees make the relationship clear on their accounts. We welcome clearer guidance from regulators in this area.”

According to Facebook’s Ad Library, Bloomberg has spent $48.5 million on campaign and issue ads since last May, and his latest strategy represents relatively uncharted territory.

“We are meeting voters everywhere on any platform that they consume their news. One of the most effective ways of reaching voters is by activating their friends and network to encourage them to support Mike for president,” Bloomberg campaign senior national spokesperson Sabrina Singh said in a statement provided to CNBC.

Over the past few years, Facebook has taken steps to add transparency around political ads. It began labeling paid political posts and archiving them in its Ad Library. But the company also faced criticism for allowing politicians to post untrue ads.

Last week, Facebook told Instagram influencers that they must disclose paid partnerships with political campaigns. It’s unclear if it will require similar disclosures for campaign staff, or how it would enforce such rules.

The main part of the campaign has seen popular meme accounts like @grapejuiceboys and @tank.sinatra post fake direct messages from Bloomberg. In one of the DMs, for example, Bloomberg says he has learned how to use Photoshop before sharing a photo of Bernie Sanders that has been a wellspring of memes recently.

Most people haven’t responded enthusiastically to the ads, even if they’re properly disclosed. “Omg such an ironic and cool way to sell out,” wrote Jon Elkin, one of the people to comment on the post — and that’s just the most PG response.

The campaign is the brainchild of Mick Purzycki, the lead strategist of Meme 2020 and the CEO of Jerry Media. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because Jerry Media was one of the companies that helped hype the infamous Fyre Festival.

Bloomberg’s social campaign extends beyond working with Meme 2020. Last week, the Daily Beast found the Bloomberg campaign contracted a company called Tribe to pay micro-influencers — accounts with more than 1,000 followers but fewer than 100,000 — $150 per post to create original content “that tells us why Mike Bloomberg is the electable candidate who can rise above the fray, work across the aisle so all Americans feel heard and respected.” The way the Bloomberg campaign sees it, memes will be essential if Democrats are going to have any chance to win against Donald Trump in the presidential election later this year.

“Mike Bloomberg 2020 has teamed up with social creators to collaborate with the campaign, including the meme world,” Sabrina Singh, a senior national spokeswoman for the Bloomberg campaign, told The New York Times. “While a meme strategy may be new to presidential politics, we’re betting it will be an effective component to reach people where they are and compete with President Trump’s powerful digital operation.”

While there’s something to be said about how effectively President Trump uses Twitter and other social media platforms to engage his base, it’s hard to say if Bloomberg’s memes will energize young voters the same way. What’s clear, however, is that this is one of the first times a political candidate has tried to use influencers to secure potential votes and is likely a sign of things to come.
