Due to the pandemic, movies like Tom Hanks’ Greyhound have been forced to premiere on streaming services. Now, Broadway is taking note. Diana: A New Musical will premiere on Netflix ahead of its 2021 Broadway opening.

The musical about the late Princess Diana was scheduled to open on March 31st, but it was put on hiatus due to the pandemic. Now, it will be filmed without an audience in the Longacre Theatre and will appear on Netflix ahead of its Broadway opening, rescheduled for May 25th, 2021.

Earlier this year, Disney won the bidding war for the filmed version of megahit musical Hamilton, which was shot in 2016 and features the original cast. Disney was going to bring the film to movie theaters in October 2021, but it’s bringing forward the release date by more than a year and skipping cinemas entirely — Hamilton will drop on Disney+ like a hot mixtape on July 3rd.

Given that’s the eve of Independence Day and protagonist Alexander Hamilton helped frame the US Constitution, that’s pretty nifty timing. Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and the Hamilton team gave Disney the green light to release the movie much earlier than originally planned, albeit as a streaming exclusive.

There’s no mention of when it might appear, although it wouldn’t arrive for holiday 2019 unless it’s effectively complete.

Apple has been rapidly expanding the list of shows and movies on TV+, but there’s still a lot of ground left to cover genre-wise beyond dramas and kids’ programming. It needs additions like this to cater to a variety of viewers, even if it’s just to give revelers something to watch after recovering from a holiday dinner.
