You may not want to put all your trust in the feature just yet. Some early users have warned that Autopilot doesn’t always recognize the cones, potentially leading to dangerous lane changes — say, steering you into oncoming traffic or construction. Tesla did remind drivers that they’re “required to pay attention at all times,” though, so it knows this isn’t a substitute for keeping your eyes open.

This is still an important step for Tesla. It still intends to enable full self-driving in the future, and that will require cars that can recognize and deal with virtually any road object. A seemingly small update like this could go a long way toward true hands-free driving.

There were even passes that violated state laws, officials said. It would pass on the right on a two-lane divided highway, or wouldn’t move back to the right-side travel lane after a pass.

A Tesla spokesperson stressed that it was the “driver’s responsibility” to maintain control, and that extended to “safely executing lane changes.” That’s consistent with past policies. The company has long included mechanisms to ensure you’re paying attention. Automatic lane changes, meanwhile, require your consent before they’re turned on.

However, that wasn’t enough for CR. The outlet argued that companies should need to provide public evidence of a semi-autonomous system’s safety before it’s made available to buyers. It also contended that Navigate on Autopilot is more trouble than it’s worth — it’s akin to “monitoring a kid behind the wheel for the very first time,” CR‘s Jake Fisher said. While Tesla was still ahead of rivals on autonomy, CR thought that it was safer and more relaxing to perform lane changes yourself.

If you want to cancel a lane change before it starts, you can either use the turn signal or press the notification pop-up on the touchscreen. And no, this isn’t an opportunity to go AWOL while you’re on the highway — the car won’t change lanes unless your hands are on the wheel.

The update also lets you enable Navigate on Autopilot at the start of every trip. If you do, it’ll kick in every time you enter a navigation route and reach the highway.

You’ll still need to have purchased an Enhanced Autopilot or Full Self-Driving Capability pack to use the feature. It’s only available in the US for now, but it should come to other countries once Tesla has received the all-clear.

It’s a significant change for Tesla. The turn stalk requirement came into place to make clear that drivers were still liable for what happened on the road. Clearly, it believes that the combination of the option and notifications fits that bill while reducing the demand from the driver — you know exactly what you’re getting into, even if you’re not using a physical toggle every time. While fully autonomous driving is still some distance away, the update gets you closer to that goal.
