The next iteration of Shin Megami Tensei has been in the works for several years, and while we already knew it was bound for Nintendo Switch, it’s remained unclear until now when you’ll be able to get your hands on it. During today’s Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase, it emerged that Shin Megami Tensei V will have a simultaneous worldwide release in 2021, and it’ll be a Switch exclusive.

Fans of the JRPG series have had a bit of a wait since the last entry. Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse dropped on Nintendo 3DS in 2016. Before that, Shin Megami Tensei 4 arrived in 2013.

After several months without a proper Direct, Nintendo at long last debuted a presentation without any prior warning. For some reason, it decided to call it a “Nintendo Direct Mini,” which is especially strange given the glut of news it delivered.

First up, several Switch games dropped today, including Panzer Dragoon: Remake and Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, along with demos for upcoming titles such as Bravely Default II. Nintendo is also rolling out a Ring Fit Adventure update today, which should come as welcome news if you managed to snag the fitness game before it started selling out everywhere.

The game’s status as a timed exclusive wasn’t a surprise; Exit the Gungeon was listed for a May 31 release on Steam and a console release was teased by the developers. But it is unusual to see an indie land on the Switch before it hits PC; usually the ports come a few months later or titles get a simultaneous release.

The listing page for the game is up on the web, though at the time this post is being written it’s still not showing up on the Switch, possibly due to this morning’s outage. (We’ll update this post when it does.)

The first episode will include game reveals, trailers and gameplay footage for PS4 and PS VR, while there will be more State of Play streams throughout the year. Sony is fairly obviously taking a page out of a rival’s playbook here. Nintendo doesn’t hold press conferences at E3 either, instead opting to make announcements throughout the year via Nintendo Direct streams.
