NBC previously worked with Snapchat for the 2018 Winter Games, offering some live coverage and highlights packages through the Discover tab. Still, this is the biggest step the Comcast subsidiary has taken to date in terms of allowing a partner to use live Olympics video, the New York Times notes.

There’s an interactive element here. Each morning, you can vote on which primetime event or athlete you want to see on Twitter, and live streams lasting five minutes or so will be broadcast on the platform. Advertisers will also be able to sponsor the Twitter coverage.

Of course, the vast majority of NBC’s Olympics coverage will stay on its own networks and digital platforms. The event is an important revenue stream for NBCUniversal; it expects to rake in over $1.2 billion in ad sales during next year’s Games.

You wouldn’t have to wait long, either, as taxis could take off every six minutes.

There are already machinations underway. Aeroports de Paris has to pick a site for a flying taxi hub in Paris by the end of 2019, and it should be ready within 18 months. The team will test the link through an “existing helicopter corridor,” according to ADP’s Edward Arkwright.

There are many pieces that have to fall into place for this to work. The taxis themselves have to both be safe enough to fly and last long enough on battery. The partners also have to ensure that the taxis mesh well with existing infrastructure and regulations. If all goes smoothly, though, you may not have to hop into a ground-based vehicle until you’re already in the City of Lights. This could also serve as a test case for other cities that want to see how well flying taxis cope with major events.

More robots will handle tasks at the games, the organizers said, with news coming later.

The committee isn’t shy about its aims: this is about showing off Japan’s prowess with robots at a moment when the world will be watching. It’ll demonstrate the “practical, real-life deployment” of the technology, project leader Hirohisa Hirukawa said. At the same time, it’s also representative of the country’s social issues. Japan’s recent focus on worker robots is meant partly to cope with a declining population that limits its employment options. These robots might be needed to ensure that humans are free to take on other roles.
