The 9to5Google team spotted a briefly visible Reddit photo that appeared to show both Pixel phones in the wild, along with specifications. The image by itself hinted that the Pixel 4a 5G (shown at right) would have an extra camera over the standard Pixel 4a, not to mention a considerably larger screen. It appears to eclipse the Pixel 5 you see on the left.

The included specs suggested both new Pixels would offer significant performance improvements over the 4a. On top of the added wide-angle camera, the phones would supposedly share a faster Snapdragon 765G chip — we’re a bit skeptical this will reach the 4a 5G, but we wouldn’t rule it out. You’d get much larger batteries, too, with a 3,800mAh unit in the Pixel 4a 5G and a 4,000mAh power pack in the Pixel 5. The Pixel 5 wouldn’t have a headphone jack, but it would have a speedy 90Hz display and 8GB of RAM versus 60Hz and 6GB in the 4a 5G.

There are still plenty of mysteries, but the pen-toting phones are expected to have less curvy designs than the S20 series. Samsung also tends to provide slightly more performance than the Galaxy S phone from that year, so don’t be surprised to see more RAM or possible CPU upgrades.

Samsung in recent years has introduced Galaxy Notes in August, with a release a few weeks afterward. With that said, it’s not certain how the pandemic will play into the release. Even if the situation has improved by August, a splashy launch isn’t likely in the cards — and that’s assuming there are no production issues.

Samsung has tried to do away with visible cameras on its phones in the past, but its next attempt might seem… familiar. Well-known leaker OnLeaks and Pigtou have posted renders of what they say is an upcoming Samsung phone (likely in the Galaxy A series) with a pop-up front facing camera. Much like the OnePlus 7 Pro and some other recent phones, you’d trade the slight inconvenience of waiting for the selfie camera to appear in return for an uninterrupted screen.

Many details are still unknown, although the back makes clear that it’s a budget device between the conventional fingerprint reader (no under-display tech here) and a conventional-looking trio of rear cameras. The 6.5-inch display would be the highlight — anything else would likely be secondary.

The rumored specs (supported by earlier claims from XDA‘s Mishaal Rahman) would also make it competitive with other top-tier phones, including a Snapdragon 865, 8GB or 12GB of RAM depending on the configuration and a hefty 5,000mAh or larger (!) battery. There are also three cameras on the back that include at least one particularly large sensor, although we wouldn’t count on this rivalling the Galaxy S20 Ultra or other camera monsters. About the only obvious letdown may be the 2,340 x 1,080 resolution, although that may be a deliberate choice to avoid hurting the phone’s longevity.

Importantly, you might not have to bend over backwards to get one in the US. Rahman mentioned that the Edge+ is believed to be coming to Verizon (Engadget’s parent company), so you might not have to buy an unlocked handset whenever this phone is ready. Whether or not the device is appealing might depend on the price — this could be appealing if it undercuts the $1,000-plus prices of some modern flagships, but might be a tougher sell if there isn’t a significant bargain.

The play-it-safe design would also involve the teardrop camera notch on the screen (though it may be smaller than before) and, crucially, the 3.5mm headphone jack. Samsung’s next Galaxy S may ditch the audio port, making the G9 a more viable option for those who hate dongles and Bluetooth headphones.

It’s not certain when the G9 might make its debut, although history suggests it could launch at Mobile World Congress in late February. Whether or not the cautious approach might help is another matter. It could work at a time when LG’s arch-rival Samsung is taking risks, but LG is still struggling in the mobile business. Samsung may thrive simply by wielding its status as a giant in the mobile world.

The back is where you see the most visible signs of compromise. Although the apparently leaked phone has a square camera hump like the Pixel 4, there’s just one sensor on the back. Sorry, folks, you wouldn’t get telephoto zoom on this device. There may be “more sensors” in the camera module, though, and there would still be a headphone jack up top to please fans of wired audio.

There are still many unknowns. It’s probable that a Pixel 4a would ship with a mid-range Snapdragon and other performance compromises, but it’s not certain just how much of a step down this would represent. Will it add sorely-missed water resistance, for example? If history is any indication, though, you might just see the 4a arrive around Google I/O in the spring.

However, there are signs that you might not have to compromise too much. It would have a hole-punch front camera as expected with other OnePlus 8 models, and the lack of an obvious fingerprint reader suggests the Lite would use under-screen tech like existing models. This more affordable model might still have a 6.4- or 6.5-inch screen, too, although we wouldn’t count on a silky-smooth 90Hz OLED panel.

It’s not certain whether this would launch alongside the rest of the 8 series, assuming the rumor is accurate in the first place. With that said, we wouldn’t be shocked if there was an 8 Lite. It’s no secret that OnePlus’ pricing has creeped upward over the years, to the point where you’re paying nearly $700 for a flagship like the 7 Pro. The 8 Lite could fill the gap for those customers who miss OnePlus’ early days of bargain-basement prices, or just those who like OnePlus’ software but can’t justify the outlay for its higher-end hardware.

The purported leak is also notable for what’s missing. There doesn’t appear to be a fingerprint reader built into the wake button, suggesting that you’ll have an in-screen fingerprint reader like the larger S10 models have today. And like the larger S11, there’s no sign of a headphone jack.

Other rumors have the S11e jumping to a minimum 6GB of RAM, a larger battery and the obligatory processor update (likely a Snapdragon 865 in North America and some other regions). You might not get a 108-megapixel main camera, however, and it’s not clear if there would be a 5G variant.

It’s worth taking the renders with a grain of salt when the S11 family isn’t expected to debut until February. Things could change in the next few months. If this leak is accurate, though, it shows that Samsung is thoroughly committed to the “e” phone line — it wasn’t just a one-off to fill a gap in the company’s lineup.

If everything is accurate (and that’s a big “if,” given that Galaxy S11 isn’t due to be released until next year), then the new camera position will likely be welcomed by buyers. As it stands now, taking selfies with the S10 can be a bit tricky due to the offset camera position.

The lens array on the back has been moved from the center to the upper left, matching the camera position on the Galaxy Note 10. There would be two rows of cameras, with up to five separate lenses along with an LED flash. This could mean an even greater choice of zoom, wide-angle and possibly depth sensing cameras. The main camera will reportedly have a 108-megapixel sensor, first seen on the Xiaomi Mi Note 10. We could also see a 5x optical zoom, 8K video recording and more.

Other changes show a curvier screen, with more rounded corners and minimal side bezels. According to recent leaks, it could have a 6.7-inch 120Hz refresh on the AMOLED panel. The power and volume buttons have been moved to the right side, and Samsung may have eliminated the Bixby button. Unlike the S10, the renders show no dedicated headphone jack, unfortunately.

Samsung has already unveiled the Exynos 990 chip that will likely be used for the phone in Korea, but it’ll reportedly pack a Snapdragon 865 chipset elsewhere. The phone will likely arrive in February next year, so this information is coming well ahead of time. Keep in mind that while @onleaks has a solid reputation for leaks, you’d still do well to take this with a grain of salt.

The leak doesn’t say much about the phone’s purported innards, but there would be one major and arguably overdue addition: wireless charging. OnePlus has skipped the technology so far in favor of its speedy wired solution, but competitive pressure might have forced its hand. It’s also reasonable to suspect that the 8 will have up-to-the-minute specs, such as the newest available Snapdragon chip (865, perhaps?).

It’s far too early to know the release date for the OnePlus 8, but history suggests you’ll see it about half a year from now. Given the 6.5-inch size, we also wouldn’t be surprised to see a larger, more powerful 8 Pro around the same time. The question is whether or not OnePlus will have more than wireless charging and a speed bump to reel in buyers. There are still a few key shortcomings in the 7 series, particularly in camera performance, and many people will likely be waiting to see if OnePlus can finally go toe-to-toe with the better camera phones on the market.
