We knew this was coming, what with the footage leaking earlier in the week. But Blizzard executives nevertheless took to the Blizzcon stage on Friday to confirm that, yes, its massively popular competitive shooter will soon have a successor. From what we saw in the trailer, players are in for a treat with 4-person missions, unlockable abilities and even a few new faces to the game’s already expansive character roster.

<img decoding="async" alt="NY Premiere of Amazon's "Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan" Season Two" data-caption="John Krasinski, from left, Noomi Rapace, and Michael Kelly attend the premiere of Amazon Prime's "Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan" season two at Metrograph on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2019, in New York.
You just can’t keep an international man of mystery down. Amazon gave its viewers a decidedly unspooky surprise on Halloween, the second season of its spy drama, Jack Ryan, a full 24 hours early. Bring in the candy bowl and turn off the porch light, it’s time to watch Jim from The Office save America from super-ISIS, or whatever ham-fisted terrorist tropes they’re using this year.

Here’s one throwback that I’m legitimately excited for. The original Razr was the very first cell phone I ever owned (pretty sure I’ve still got it tucked away in a drawer somewhere). Now Motorola is bringing it back for a new generation. Fingers crossed it won’t suffer the same design flaws as the Galaxy Fold.

Even with the Playstation 5 peeking over the horizon, Sony’s current generation console is still dominating the gaming market. The company announced this past week that it has sold a total of 102.5 million units since the PS4’s release, handily beating out anything from Nintendo, Sega or Microsoft. But even with its commercial success the PS4 doesn’t look like it will take the sales crown from the current titleholder, the PS2, which sold more than 155 million units during its production run.

Blizzard is taking us back to Sanctuary, though we know not when. Confirming yet another leak from last week, the gaming company confirmed last Friday that it will soon release the fourth installment of the hack-and-slash RPG. With a seamless world map (read: fewer loading screens), deep character customization and “endless playability and progression,” this gruesomely gothic vision of hell is sure to keep players enthralled for ages.

The Overwatch team is introducing character leveling this time around. There’ll be unlockable abilities (or “talents”) for the hero missions and possibly story missions, but you won’t be able to customize hero abilities in player-vs.-player modes. You can expect to see several heroes join the ranks, including the long-rumored Sojourn. The current heroes will have new character models, and Blizzard is refreshing the user interface too.

Overwatch 2 will have an additional core mode called Push, which debuts on a map set in Toronto. It sees teams battling for control of a robot that pushes an objective to their opponents’ side of a symmetrical map. You can expect more maps, including ones set in Rio de Janeiro, Gothenburg and Monte Carlo.

Overwatch now has more than 50 million players and Blizzard doesn’t plan to leave fans of the original game in the lurch. All your progression (including achievements and unlocked cosmetics and emotes) will carry over into Overwatch 2 and you’ll get access to maps and heroes from the sequel. What’s more, players across both Overwatch and Overwatch 2 can team up with each other or duke it out in the series’ core 6 vs. 6 competitive mode.

Overwatch 2 doesn’t have a release date as yet, but Blizzard confirmed it’s coming to PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. It’s still planning to release updates for Overwatch in the meantime, but because its bigger focus is on Overwatch 2, there won’t be a new Archives mission during the anniversary event in May.

Not that Blizzard will leave its competitive gameplay untouched. O2 will supposedly include a major new mode, Push, introduced to sit alongside the existing Assault, Control, Escort and Hybrid options. You could expect a new map to match (Toronto) and “at least” one new hero.

There’s no mention of when the new title would arrive, although development is said to be far enough along that BlizzCon attendees will get a chance to play. At this point, though, O2‘s biggest challenge may be its creator’s reputation. Blizzard is still dealing with the uproar over its less-than-kind response to Hong Kong protest supporters, and the fallout from that may overshadow even major announcements like an Overwatch sequel.
