GM has revealed its various brands’ electric vehicle plans in its 10th sustainability report, and one of the most notable projects is Chevrolet’s BET Truck. Apparently, Chevy is working on its first full-size electric pickup truck, and it will have the capability to run over 400 miles on a single charge. That’s pretty much all GM revealed about it, and as Autoblog notes, it’s unclear if the EV will be an electrified Silverado or a new model altogether.

A rumor went around last year that GM will release its first electric truck in 2021, but it’s unclear if it’s this particular model. It’s also not clear if the truck mentioned in the report will be one of the 20 electric vehicles GM vowed would be on the road by 2023. GM made the commitment to roll out a substantial number of EVs by mid-2020s a few years ago in hopes that its brands’ lineup will be mostly electric come 2030. Earlier this year, the automaker announced that it’s investing $2.2 billion into turning its Detroit-Hamtramck facility into its first assembly plant that’s completely devoted to EVs.

Still, the James ad says a lot about GM’s expectations. Where it treated the Chevy Bolt almost as a side project (the Bolt has never been produced in truly large numbers), it’s willing to spend a fortune on a Super Bowl ad with an NBA star to market a Hummer EV that won’t be available for well over a year. GM undoubtedly wants this truck to be a mainstream hit, and it’s hoping some early buzz will help make this happen.

This could be an important move for Karma. It has remained a niche brand ever since Chinese car part maker Wanxiang Group revived the original Fisker in 2014, selling roughly 1,000 Reveros in 2019. Lower-priced electric trucks would give it a much wider audience, especially in North America where pickups are popular.

It’s going to face stiff competition, however. The most conspicuous challenger is Tesla’s Cybertruck, but Karma will also have to challenge Rivian’s R1T, GM’s still-mysterious pickup and the eventual electric Ford F-150. These are mostly big names that have extensive experience with EV technology and large-scale truck manufacturing, and it’ll be no mean feat to compete on both fronts.

At the moment, the automaker reportedly plans to reinvent the Hummer as a single pickup truck model aimed at off-road enthusiasts. The WSJ says the new model will fall under the company’s GMC brand. Additionally, the car will reportedly be the first among several other electric SUVs and pickup trucks GM plans to bring to market over the next few years.

While it’s something of a surreal surprise that GM is bringing back the hummer, it makes sense. If Tesla proved anything with the Cybertruck, it’s that there’s a lot of interest in electric pickup trucks. However, beyond the Cybertruck, the Hummer will have to compete in a crowded field that will soon include the Ford F-150 and Rivian R1T.

Ford added that it was going to have electrified trucks regardless, including a hybrid F-150 in 2020 and a fully electric F-150 in “a few years.”

There might not be a clear-cut winner if there is a duel, official or otherwise (Musk hinted at one next week). As astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson pointed out, the Cybertruck won Tesla’s pre-recorded battle because its inherently heavy design made the most of the EV’s high torque. The F-150, meanwhile, had relatively little weight over its rear wheel drive system and thus didn’t have the traction needed to fight back. Fully loading both would still favor the Cybertruck, but there could be situations where Ford’s truck emerged victorious.

We all love Torque. But high Torque just spins a tire in place if there’s not enough weight to provide traction. Fully load the F150, giving highest traction to its rear wheels, then try to drag that up the hill. I otherwise agree: Load both to the max and the highest torque wins

— Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson) November 26, 2019

Other than unveiling Tesla’s new low-polygon-count pickup, Elon Musk also introduced an electric ATV at the event last night. Dubbed the Cyberquad, Musk confirmed on Twitter today that the two-person ATV will be available “first” as an option for Cybertruck buyers. At the event, the four-wheeler rode into the back of a Cybertruck as the truck’s adaptive suspension leaned back for easier loading, and then the ATV plugged in for charging right there in the bed.

We still don’t know anything else about its capabilities or potential cost, but early adopters of the truck who want to go off-roading may appreciate a zero-emission recreational vehicle to go along with their purchase.

In a few other tweets, Musk indicated there will be a solar power option for the truck capable of generating enough energy to drive 15 miles per day. He also referenced the “armor glass” demo that went awry, mentioning that earlier throws didn’t damage the window and eventually posting a slow-motion video of lead designer Franz von Holzhausen’s previous attempt.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has put the F-150 squarely in his company’s sights, and tonight we’ll find out how close it can get with a new “Cybertruck.” In a tweet earlier today the exec referenced his 2012 goal of “a Tesla supertruck with crazy torque, dynamic air suspension and corners like its on rails.”

At a shareholder’s meeting earlier this year Musk said the truck will “look like it came out of a sci-fi movie” and the run up to its unveiling has been heavy on Blade Runner references. What does that all add up to? We’ll find out shortly — check out the livestream right here.

Musk talked up the truck at Tesla’s annual shareholders meeting in June. He suggested that Ford’s F-150, which Musk called a “great truck,” is a bit of a benchmark for Tesla’s own vehicle (Ford’s working on an electric version of that, too).

The Cybertruck has been crafted to “meet or exceed an F-150. If the F-150 can do it then a Tesla truck should be able to do it.” Musk suggested it has a bold “cyberpunk” design, “like it came out of a sci-fi movie.” It seems the rest of us will get to determine whether that’s accurate in a couple of weeks.

Musk also noted the reveal date is “strangely familiar.” The classic cyberpunk movie Blade Runner is set in Los Angeles in November 2019, after all.

The truck mostly remains a mystery. Tesla has hinted at a “cyberpunk” design (you’re looking at a teaser above) that will purportedly offer the carrying ability of a Ford F-150 and the performance of a base Porsche 911, but not much more than that. The EV maker has strong incentives to show more, at least. Challengers like Rivian are working on electric pickups of their own, and Ford’s electric F-150 prototype is undoubtedly a shot across Tesla’s bow. The sooner Tesla can unveil its fabled pickup, the sooner it can steal the thunder from its rivals.
