In a statement provided to Engadget, a Sonos spokesperson said:

Sonos has been on a journey to diversify its supply chain and expand production into new countries in a manner that is sustainable and supports long term growth. Supporting this effort and investment has resulted in upcoming changes in pricing. Beginning January 9, 2020, pricing in the United States will be updated to $649 for Amp and $449 for Port.

Sonos is not the only major tech company preparing to relocate some of its production out of China, as trade tension with the Trump administration continues. Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported that Google is moving production of its US-bound Nest thermostats and motherboards to Taiwan. The Wall Street Journal said Nintendo is shifting at least some of its Switch production to Southeast Asia. Apple can supposedly make its US-bound iPhones outside of China if necessary, and Samsung closed its last Chinese phone factory in October.

But this is the first manufacturing move and subsequent price hike that we have seen since the Trump administration announced its tariffs on tech products imported from China. It could foreshadow a future trend. Though, China has reportedly warned tech companies that they could face “permanent consequences” if they move manufacturing in response to US tariffs, not just the usual security-related diversification.

For Sonos, it appears only the price of these two niche products will be impacted. Other products are expected to remain the same price.

“The new price better reflects the substantial value of Hulu + Live TV and allows us to continue offering all of the popular live news, sports and entertainment programming included in the plan,” the company explained in the announcement.

To help ease the pain, the company recommends switching to streaming-only plans during times of the year when you don’t need live TV. It gave the end of football season as an example. Sure, that works, but it’s not necessarily an ideal scenario, especially for those of us who are terrible at planning or remembering to cancel.

At $54.99 per month, Hulu + Live TV is now $5 a month more than YouTube TV. Hulu isn’t the only company raising rates though, as AT&T did the same in October. As live TV streaming becomes increasingly more popular, and services continue to expand their content lineup, higher prices are inevitable. Which begs the question: Is this really better than cable?

Service prices are climbing to “reflect the cost to deliver content to our customers,” AT&T said in a statement to Engadget. It’s not clear if this reflects higher channel carriage rates, AT&T’s infrastructure costs or a combination of both.

A price increase seemed likely regardless of those costs. The carrier is focused more on making AT&T TV Now profitable than on racking up subscribers, and it’s been losing subscribers in recent months — 168,000 just in the second quarter of this year. A rate increase theoretically makes up for that loss. As you might guess, though, this also risks alienating subscribers who balk at the new prices and don’t care for AT&T’s particular channel offerings. Rivals are raising prices as well, but the gap could be large enough now that viewers might be tempted to switch.
