It won’t surprise you to hear that Bethesda is also using this as an excuse to slash prices on games that wouldn’t make much sense outside of QuakeCon. You can get the reimagined Prey and Dishonored 2 at 80 percent discounts, while Fallout 4 and its VR counterpart are both 75 percent off. And if you haven’t played Skyrim by this point, you can snag it or its VR edition at a 67 percent price reduction.

Yes, Bethesda is laying the groundwork for Doom Eternal, Wolfenstein: Youngblood and other upcoming games. This is still a good excuse to explore id’s back catalog, though, and might help explain why QuakeCon persists 22 years later.

Thankfully, you won’t have to pay extra to get something. Weapon skins, world events, challenges and new rides (the Mech you see above, plus the One-Wheeler) are all slated to be available throughout 2019. You’ll have a reason to keep playing even if you blaze through main story, then. The question is whether or not Rage 2 will receive similar treatment once 2020 rolls around. It’s certainly nothing new for single-player games to get expansions, but they rarely have roadmaps with month-by-month commitments. We wouldn’t rule out a change in pace based on demand.

We’ve asked Bethesda if the releases will be exclusive to Steam. It didn’t mention as much in the announcement, but we wouldn’t expect these titles to come to the Epic Games Store (or other portals) regardless.

The developer isn’t necessarily taking sides in the battle between Steam and Epic’s store. Still, it’s hard to shake the comparisons — Bethesda is making its move right as a slew of big releases have been announced as EGS exclusives. Like it or not, you might have to run at least two launchers to cover the bulk of major new releases in the future.
