You’ll now be able to play as Resident Evil’s most iconic monster in the RE 3 remake’s multiplayer mode. The latest Resident Evil: Resistance update adds Nemesis as a playable character for the first time in the franchise and also adds former Russian special forces Nicholai Ginovaef as a Mastermind.

Resistance, which was originally supposed to be a spinoff, pits four Survivors against a Mastermind that can lay traps and sic monsters on them. If you choose to play as Nicholai, you’ll be able to control Nemesis to hunt Survivors down, though you can also use camera-mounted firearms, as well as trackers to keep an eye on them.

You can check out the multiplayer game for free until April 3rd, after which you’ll need to own the Resident Evil 3 remake to keep playing. When Capcom announced the latter, which it will release that same day, it said Resident Evil: Resistance would be bundled with its latest stab at reworking a core game from the survival horror series.

Resident Evil: Resistance borrows a page out of the Dead by Daylight playbook. It pits a quartet of survivors against a sole mastermind, who can set forth monsters and place traps to take out the four other players.

The remake of Resident Evil 3 will be out in just a few weeks, but Capcom wanted to give eager gamers the chance to play Resident Evil Resistance — a multiplayer game that comes with Resident Evil 3 — a bit early. The publisher had planned on opening a public beta today on Steam, PS4 and Xbox One, but only the latter has launched on time, as the company announced that technical issues have caused delays for the Steam and PS4 versions. Capcom didn’t mention what exactly those problems are, or how long it expects the delay to last. Only 14 days remain until the retail launch of both titles, so hopefully the beta will be available shortly — otherwise the sneak peek would be rather pointless.

Resident Evil 3 was announced just three months ago, yet it will be out on April 3rd, so it feels like Capcom has been rushing the game to market, but the game has actually been in development for over three years. It seems like the publisher knew it had a hit on its hands while developing Resident Evil 2, which came out in January of 2019.

Capcom also announced an open beta for Resident Evil Resistance, a multiplayer game that comes free with Resident Evil 3. The game allows players to join a group of four “Survivors” or serve as the “Mastermind,” who sets traps to kill off the other players. The beta will run from March 19th until the game’s full launch alongside Resident Evil 3.

It’s certainly a good time to be a gamer. Despite the fact that the current generation of consoles is winding down, the hits seem to keep on coming. And the introduction of the PS5 and Xbox Series X will only bring more new experiences when they launch later this year.

As for specific titles Sony will focus on, the details are a little hazy. During the previous State of Play, it announced a release date for The Last of Us: Part II (which it later delayed to May), so it’s not unreasonable to imagine Sony has some major announcements in store.

Last week, it emerged the early access period for Dreams is winding down, suggesting a proper release date for the game creation platform is on the way. There’s a chance there’ll be confirmation of the rumored Resident Evil 3 remake, after purported cover art emerged recently and Geoff Keighley said there won’t be any word on that front at this week’s Game Awards.

And then there’s the looming shadow of what may well be Sony’s last major first-party title for PS4, Ghost of Tsushima. There’s been barely any news about that project since E3 2018, but Sony updated the YouTube playlist for the game last week, perhaps with an unlisted video.
