Gregorini further claimed that Shyamalan simply took her premise and put it through the “male lens,” with men looking down on a woman’s mental health issues and discussing the sex appeal of the nanny. Shyamalan, series creator Tony Basgallop and Apple ‘negated’ the experiences of Gregorini and other women involved in Emanuel (which had its roots in Gregorini’s life story), according to the lawsuit.

Apple has declined to comment on the case.

Whether or not the lawsuit succeeds is difficult to say. These kinds of disputes certainly aren’t new, including to Shyamalan — Simon & Schuster raised concerns about his movie The Village after noticing similarities to Margaret Peterson Haddix’s youth-oriented book Running Out of Time, although it never led to legal action. Gregorini may have to show that the plot similarities are too close to be coincidental.

Dickinson, For All Mankind and See also got early renewals. Apple ordered two seasons of The Morning Show right from the start, so its future won’t be up in the air for a while yet.

To some extent, Apple needs these early renewals. Although there are numerous new shows in the pipeline, Apple TV+ won’t have a large selection for a while. The continuation of Servant and other early shows will ensure that you have more to watch (and of course, keep that subscription going) even if you exhaust the next wave of shows.

The outlets also noted, citing anonymous sources close to Apple, that the company is “thrilled” with the show’s performances so far, and the unspecified millions of viewers who watched during their first weekend available and beyond. New episodes for all of the shows became available Friday morning, and their first seasons will continue to roll out over the coming weeks. The next new original series to debut on Apple TV+ will be M. Night Shyamalan’s Servant, which is schedule to premiere on November 28th.

As pre-planned as it may be, the show of support is important, with Disney+ just days away from launch, and content continuing to roll out from competitors like Hulu and Netflix. That’s in addition to mostly-lukewarm reviews (from critics at least, as fan ratings on Rotten Tomatoes range from 83 percent for See to 95 percent for The Morning Show), and Apple moving into a space where it has almost no experience. Back when Netflix started streaming original content like Lilyhammer, House of Cards and Hemlock Grove, it also quickly picked up additional seasons.

With Apple TV+ opting for week-by-week rollouts instead of dropping off new seasons all at once, we’ll see if viewers stick around — whether it’s on a free trial or not — to see what comes next.

The series premieres November 28th. It’s potentially one of the more important additions to the Apple TV+ lineup. In addition to being one of the first series to debut post-launch, it’s also Apple’s first thriller. And then there’s the matter of M. Night Shyamalan making a return to TV. His track record for producing movies has been hit-or-miss, to put it mildly, but he also hasn’t produced much in the way of TV shows — will Servant fare better? The trailer suggests it might, but Apple and Shyamalan will have a lot to prove with the full series.

Servant’s story revolves around a Philadelphia couple who brings an unnervingly life-like doll into their home after losing their baby. They even hire a mysterious nanny to look after the doll, and it sounds like she’s bringing a whole ‘nother level of creepiness to the show — Shyamalan said a few years from now, “there’ll be [attendees dressed up as the nanny] walking around at Comic Con.”

When the director’s deal with Apple was first announced, reports said the tech giant ordered 10 episodes. If people eat it up, though, the series could be a lot longer. According to Deadline, M. Night envisions a lengthy saga that’s spread over 6 seasons with 10 episodes each.
