Its newest game, Hardspace: Shipbreaker, sees players take on the role of a blue collar space ship salvager. You owe a nefarious megacorp called Lynx about a billion credits, so you spend your days stripping down decommissioned ships for parts, bidding on salvage jobs and hunting out valuable materials in a bid to clear your debt. There’s more to it than simply smashing and grabbing, though. You’ll have to be careful about where you start slicing and dicing (with your plasma beam) because, well, this is space, so at any point you could get sucked out into the abyss, or start an explosion. Don’t worry, though, if you die Lynx will just resurrect you and stick the cost on your mounting debt.

So it’s a methodical game that brings with it the relaxing aspects of repetitive and visually-satisfying tasks, but also… danger — and intrigue, too. You’ll be left wondering exactly what Lynx is up to, questioning whether you’ll ever get out debt, and what will happen to you if you do. Hardspace: Shipbreaker will arrive on Steam Early Access sometime this summer.

The booster was expected to land on a drone ship, called Of Course I Still Love You, approximately eight minutes and 24 seconds after launch. Instead, the booster made a “soft landing” in the ocean next to the ship.

Falcon 9 B1056.4 has missed the drone ship. pic.twitter.com/259Yh545uy

SpaceX has gotten pretty good at landing and reusing its boosters, but this isn’t the first time it’s lost one to the sea. In 2018, a core booster plummeted straight into the ocean. Last April, the company managed to land three Falcon Heavy boosters, but the core booster, which landed on Of Course I Still Love You, fell off the drone ship on its way back to land. Then, in June 2019, two side boosters landed successfully in Cape Canaveral, but the center core booster missed the ship by a few feet.

Still, the booster used this morning broke a SpaceX record for fastest turnaround. Prior to today’s mission, the booster launched just 63 days ago on December 16th. The company’s previous record for booster reuse was a 72-day turnaround of a Block 4 booster used to launch the TESS and CRS-15 missions for NASA in 2018. As SpaceX ramps up its Starlink constellation deployment, it will try to reduce its booster turnaround time even more.

The vessel isn’t completely eco-friendly, though. As dockside hydrogen filling stations are more than a little rare, the Aqua will have a diesel engine backup to help it reach port.

Aqua isn’t expected to reach the sea until 2024. It’s easy to bing up criticism of the purchase. Couldn’t the money for this yacht go toward funding electric and hydrogen vehicle projects that could have more of an impact than one boat meant for pleasure cruises? Like Gates’ investment in the sunlight electricity startup Heliogen, though, this may be as much about symbolic support for zero-emissions technology as anything else — in this case, proof that powered boats don’t have to make a huge dent in the environment.

With Ship, users can invite their friends (as well as parents, siblings and especially wise roommates) to join a “crew”. Members of the user’s crew can swipe on dating profiles on their behalf. A “crew chat” group messaging feature can be used for members to discuss the merits of a potential match in greater detail.

Getting friends to weigh in on potential romantic pursuits on a dating app may be nerve-wracking for some, but for others, it’s a vital part of courtship. The practice of texting friends screenshots of notable profiles is already pretty widespread. An entire subreddit, r/Tinder, is devoted to sharing conversations and reviewing profiles. In recent updates, many dating apps have acknowledged this surge in groupthink mentality. Tinder, Hinge and Bumble all allow users to share profiles with friends.

But an entire, extended swiping session on a friend’s behalf is a step further than merely linking to an attractive profile. The former requires a degree of trust and intimacy that most users likely don’t share with casual acquaintances. On Ship, the practice of “shipping” or swiping for a friend is taking off. A total of 53 percent of the matches made on Ship come from people who are swiping on behalf of their friends, a spokesperson for the app confirmed. With online dating, it may be the case that our friends understand us even better than we do.

The switch will affect all DDG-51 class (Arleigh Burke) ships using the Integrated Bridge and Navigation System. You should see the first change in summer 2020. The first in-service ship to make the leap will be the USS Ramage, while the first brand new destroyer to drop touchscreens will be the USS Ted Stevens.

The decision isn’t so much a flat-out rejection of technology as an acknowledgment that it has to make sense and be easy to use. Program Executive Officer for Ships Rear Admiral Bill Galinis noted that the feedback slotted into the “just because you can doesn’t mean you should” mindset. The Navy adopted touchscreens without considering that the system was “overly complex,” and that there should be “bridge commonality” to help sailors adjust if they’re transferred to another ship.

This isn’t to say the Navy is giving up on bridge touchscreens altogether. However, Navy chief engineer Rear Admiral Lorin Selby noted that any interface needed to be consistent and help crews “quickly pick up” on a given situation. Warships need to be intuitive to operate — the consequences are serious if they aren’t.
