SiriusXM and emergency tech company RapidSOS are partnering to provide first responders more data in the event of a car crash, the companies announced today. SiriusXM technology that connects drivers to speak with 911 dispatchers is already part of 10 million cars in North America, according to a statement. With RapidSOS, 911 dispatchers will now get critical crash information without having to speak with vehicle occupants.

Uber, Waze and other companies have also partnered with RapidSOS to share customers’ locations and crash data with 911 dispatchers. Under the SiriusXM/RapidSOS partnership, first responders will receive customers’ locations as well as a description of the vehicle, whether airbags were deployed, crash impact data, the number of people in the vehicle and contact information of occupants. RapidSOS users with linked accounts can also choose to share important medical information. All data will be sent “securely and with user consent,” according to the statement. 

Thanks to a report from The Wall Street Journal, we knew this was coming. Now it’s official: SiriusXM is buying podcast platform Stitcher from the E.W. Scripps Company for $325 million. That’s considerably more than the $4.5 million Scripps spent to acquire it from Deezer in 2016 (Deezer owned Stitcher for less than two years), even if you combine it with the $55 million purchase of Midroll Media that Scripps made the year before and combined with Stitcher. For that investment, SiriusXM gets a popular destination for publishers, creators and advertisers with both production and distribution capabilities. Plus the acquisition adds original podcasts to SiriusXM’s lineup of sports, talk radio and music streaming.

The podcast wars that have heated up over the last several months and content is king. So are exclusives. The Stitcher-produced slate includes Freakonomics Radio, How Did This Get Made?, SuperSoul Sunday from The Oprah Winfrey Network, Office Ladies, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, Literally! with Rob Lowe, LeVar Burton Reads, Comedy Bang! Bang!, and WTF with Marc Maron. SiriusXM doesn’t mention making any shows exclusive to its platforms — except for the ad-free, early access and bonus content listeners who splurge for a Stitcher Premium subscription get for $5 a month. And don’t worry, it sounds like the free option for accessing all of the shows isn’t going anywhere.

You can listen to Stern and hundreds of other talk and music channels through the SiriusXM app and web player. Channels dedicated to Dave Matthews Band and Billy Joel are set to return to the service tomorrow, while a channel focused on feel-good tunes called #StayHome will also start streaming on April 1st.

While many subscribers listen to SiriusXM channels when they’re in their cars, fewer folks are on the roads right now because of stay-at-home measures to limit the spread of COVID-19. SiriusXM is joining a wide range of platforms that are offering free access to at least some of their services at the minute, giving you more options for things to do while you’re staying home.

Podcasts have been booming over the last few years — Stitcher, Apple, Spotify and plenty of others have been building out their services while Pandora seemed to struggle. The company hopes to differentiate itself with the Podcast Genome Project, which uses a mix of algorithms and manual curation to suggest both shows and individual episodes to listen to. Pandora also offers some exclusive shows from SiriusXM hosts like Kevin Hart and Hoda Kotb, and upcoming scripted series based on Marvel superheroes.

With Pandora having played second fiddle to Spotify for years now, the company may need more impressive features to attract users and retain existing ones. That said, selection and convenience are two of the more important elements for streaming services to cover, and Pandora seems to be putting more effort into both those fronts.

Each of the scripted series will be 10 episodes long. In turn, the first four will focus on Wolverine, Hawkeye, Black Widow and Star-Lord, with the fifth and final series seeing the four superheroes teaming up. As for what else you can expect from the company, Marvel says one highlight will be a regular talk show series that will feature celebrity interviews. The two companies also plan to host themed live events as part of the multi-year partnership.

Once the series launch, SiriusXM subscribers will be able to listen to them on any device that supports the platform, including the Apple TV, PlayStation 4 and Sonos speakers. If you don’t have a SiriusXM subscription, they’ll also be available to listen to on the Pandora mobile app for both paid and free users.

If the quality of Marvel’s Wolverine: The Long Night podcast is any indication of what fans can expect from the company’s new slate of audio productions, then they’re in for a treat. The Long Night was a slick production that featured Castlevania‘s Richard Armitage voicing Wolverine. If you’ve already listened to The Long Night, Marvel’s latest podcast, Marvels, is set to premiere this fall.

The shows hit on a number of genres, including entertainment, music, sports and comedy; hosts you may have heard of include Andy Cohen, Kevin Hart, Ricky Gervais, Christopher “Mad Dog” Russo, Larry the Cable Guy and Jeff Foxworthy. The SiriusXM shows should be live on Pandora’s mobile app now for both free and premium users, and they’re all grouped under a SiriusXM category when you browse for shows through the app.

Given that nearly all original content from SiriusXM has been restricted to subscribers for years, it’s noteworthy to see the service using Pandora to cross-promote its material. But given that both Pandora and SiriusXM have both struggled for survival at various points in their history, it makes sense to share their assets in a way that could make Pandora users more likely to stick around in the face of fierce competition from Spotify and Apple.
