Tom Hanks is joining the ranks of stars premiering movies on streaming services during the pandemic, but he’s not going to one of the usual outlets. Deadline reports that Hanks is premiering his WWII naval drama Greyhound on Apple TV+, making it Apple’s largest movie project to date. The tech firm hasn’t announced a release date, although Greyhound was was originally slated to debut on Father’s Day weekend (the weekend of June 19th) through Sony Pictures. It’s safe to say you won’t see it in movie theaters when many are likely to remain closed even as lockdowns lift.

Hanks wrote the movie and plays an officer who takes command of a Navy destroyer during the early days of WWII, when the US had formed an alliance with the UK to deliver critical resources for the fight against Germany.

While the Crossfire name won’t register as one of the most popular shooters for some US gamers — no, it’s not related to the board game with the tiny metal balls — the free-to-play tactical first person shooter is extremely popular in China and South Korea. In operation for over ten years, it claims a player base of over 650 million plus lifetime revenue of over $10 billion, and producer Neal Moritz (Fast & Furious series, S.W.A.T., Preacher, The Boys) has been developing a film adaptation since 2015. Now Variety has announced that Sony Pictures will partner on the flick with Korean game developer Smilegate and China’s Tencent Pictures.

If accurate, Knight is the latest casualty of a production that has faced hurdles for years. Veteran director David O. Russell was initially attached to the Uncharted move, only to be followed up by Stranger Things‘ Shawn Levy and 10 Cloverfield Lane‘s Dan Trachtenberg. The project has been around for long enough that Wahlberg, once tapped to play the swashbuckling Nathan Drake, is now expected to play Drake’s older ally Victor Sullivan.

The movie is supposedly still a “priority” at Sony, according to Deadline. If you thought the Indiana Jones-inspired series warranted a movie, you’ll still get your wish. Whether or not it lives up to expectations is another matter — even with the A-list casting, it’s not guaranteed to be a hit. For that matter, there’s a concern that the movie may come too late. Assuming it debuts in 2021, the last game in the series (Lost Legacy) will be a four-year-old title made for an old console. If Sony was hoping for synergy between the movie and the games, it might have lost its biggest opportunity.

Sony has been trying for many years to get an adaptation of Naughty Dog’s hit game series off the ground. With the latest approach, Holland is set to play a younger version of Nathan Drake in a prequel. Production is slated to start early next year with a December 2020 release date. However, with reports of Disney and Sony agreeing a deal for another Spider-Man movie set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for 2021, it remains to be seen whether Holland will have to don his Spider Suit again before filming the Uncharted movie.

If Knight does take the reins, he’ll follow in the footsteps of several others. The most recent filmmaker to depart the director’s chair is Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane). Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) and David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle) were also slated to direct at various points.

While Trachtenberg — who recently directed the pilot episode of Amazon’s super hero sendup The Boys — is out on Uncharted, Sony has added to some talent to the project. PlayStation Productions, the media company set up by Sony last year, is now on board with the film, per Deadline. Assuming Uncharted eventually make its to movie theaters, it will be the first feature-length production to have the PlayStation Productions name attached to it.

The Uncharted film has had a pretty troubled history since it was first announced back in 2014, with an original planned release date set for 2016. Trachtenberg isn’t even the first director to leave the project — Stranger Things director Shawn Levy was attached at one point before exiting. The delays may be for the best, though. In 2017, Spider-Man star Tom Holland signed on to tackle the role of young Nathan Drake. Since he apparently won’t have any more MCU films on his plate (at least for now), he should be able to keep busy with the Uncharted film that is set to be released in December 2020.
