The company didn’t give further explanation regarding why the role was recast. Bryan Intihar, a director on Marvel’s Spider-Man weighed in on the update in a tweet. “… As we discussed the franchise’s future and moving to the PS5, it quickly became apparent that even more believable-looking characters made finding a better facial match for Yuri Lowenthal — who we all love as Peter — a necessity,” Intihar said. He added that he understood fans’ surprise, and said the decision wasn’t made lightly.

Aside from Peter Parker’s new look, we can also expect updated graphics to include ray-traced reflections, ambient shadows and higher-fidelity details on characters. Spider-Man has three new spider suits to traverse New York City in. Further, the game includes a new photo mode initially developed for the upcoming spinoff Marvel’s Spider Man: Miles Morales.

Other updates take advantage of the PS5’s capabilities, like near-instant loading, Spatial 3D audio on compatible headsets, and the DualSense controllers’ vibrations and adaptive triggers. Furthermore, the updated game — and Peter Parker’s new face — will be rendered  at 60 frames per second.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered will be available November 12th when you purchase the Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition physically or digitally for $69.99. It’s not clear yet whether you’ll be able to by the remaster on its own yet.

Yesterday’s PlayStation 5 showcase packed a strong lineup of AAA and independently developed games destined for the console, but the Spider-Man: Miles Morales reveal got some of the strongest reactions. Later, some comments from a Sony exec published as a followup in The Telegraph (paywalled) suggested that this game would be expansion to the PS4 title released in 2018, forcing developer Insomniac to respond publicly.

The brief teaser didn’t explain a lot about what the game is, but as community director James Stevenson tweeted in response to someone asking about a “remaster,” “Remaster what? It’s a new standalone game.” Now that all that is settled, we can all just watch the teaser trailer again.

Connected starts as a story about a dad upset that his kids spend too much time on their devices. He attempts to change that by taking them on a family road trip, but things change quickly when robots turn evil and technology as a whole seems to revolt.

What makes Connected more interesting is that it’s being produced by Christopher Miller and Philip Lord, who both worked on The Lego Movie and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. It’s directed by Michael Rianda, the creative director behind Gravity Falls. Connected will build on the Into the Spider-Verse animation tech and offer a “more sophisticated take on tech than ‘phone bad,'” Miller said in a tweet.

Connected will arrive in theaters on September 18th.

Disney said that the “World Engineering Brigade” (aka WEB) will house the new Spider-Man attraction and let guests websling alongside the friendly neighborhood hero. You can get an idea of how the animatronic hero will work via a video from the Disney+ series The Imagineering Story dug up by SlashFilm (below).

It looks like the animatronic character is fitted with articulating robotic joints, then flung high into the air by some sort of bungie mechanism. Once airborne, he can do all kinds of Spidey-like maneuvers including flips and legs-akimbo web-spinning. The figure is then captured by a net when he lands.

Other attractions at Avengers Campus will include the Pym Test Kitchen eatery that use Ant-Man and the Wasp’s shrink/grow tech to create super-sized and super small foods. Guests will also be able to team up with other heroes like Black Widow, Doctor Strange, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, Dora Milaje, Thor, Loki and Iron Man. There’s also Avengers Headquarters “where guests may witness Earth’s mightiest heroes springing into action at a moment’s notice all over the building,” Disney wrote.

You can also expect smaller but sizeable bargains for hotter recent games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (down to $50), The Outer Worlds ($45) and Borderlands 3 ($40).

Sony is also offering discounts on key PS4 accessories to go with your system, both inside and outside of the store. Amazon is selling the DualShock 4 for $39, or a substantial $21 off the usual price. A one-year PlayStation Plus subscription, meanwhile, costs just $45 (25 percent off) — we’d consider that virtually mandatory if your recipient is going to play most PS4 games online. Some Sony hardware deals are also available through the PlayStation Store, including the DualShock offer, discounted Gold Wireless Headsets for $70 (normally $100) and a $250 PS VR bundle (typically $350) that includes Blood & Truth and Everybody’s Golf VR.

These are all solid deals, although there is a caveat with some of the hardware. While next year’s PlayStation 5 will have backwards compatibility for games, it’s not clear just how well existing hardware will work with the new console. You may want to splurge on PS4 gear if you either have a specific need for it (say, extra gamepads for local multiplayer) or don’t expect to buy the PS5 for a long while.

Bloodstained was created by longtime Castlevania producer Koji Igarashi, and it’s essentially a greatest-hits compilation of all the best bits of his seminal series, with just enough changes to ensure Konami’s lawyers don’t come knocking. Control

What do you get the gamer who has everything? You get weird. Control is a top-notch sci-fi action game from Alan Wake studio Remedy Entertainment, and it’s filled with supernatural phenomena, government conspiracies and alien entities. It’s kind of like The X-Files but if Scully had a shape-shifting gun and the power of telekinesis.

It’s possible that Control slipped through the cracks for plenty of gaming fans this year, lost among high-profile launches like Destiny 2: Shadowkeep, Pokemon: Sword and Pokemon Shield, Kingdom Hearts 3, Apex Legends and whatever Fortnite is doing now. Overwatch (Switch)

Switch owners have plenty of options when it comes to games. The system has a bevy of Mario titles, indie games and AAA experiences ready to roll, but when it comes to multiplayer shooters, the choice has basically been Splatoon or something from Bethesda. That is, until Overwatch showed up on Switch.

Overwatch is already a successful competitive shooter for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and it has a robust international eSports scene. The Switch version of the game isn’t as high fidelity as other editions, but it’s a fantastic way for fans to scratch the Overwatch itch while traveling, before going to bed or while their main gaming screen is otherwise occupied. Overwatch on Switch offers a more casual competitive scene, and something unique for Nintendo’s library. — J.C.

Risk of Rain 2 (Switch)

This is a true ground-floor opportunity. Risk of Rain 2 comes from independent studio Hopoo Games, and it’s the sequel to the acclaimed 2013 roguelike game of the same name (sans one “2”). Technically, Risk of Rain 2 won’t come out until spring of next year, but it’s playable now as an Early Access title, allowing fans to provide feedback to the developers and help polish the final product. But so far, Risk of Rain 2 is an addictive, nonstop shooting and looting frenzy with a spectacular soundtrack, and it’s worth playing as soon as possible. Plus, participating in the Early Access community is a great way to earn forum cred as a gaming fan.

Risk of Rain 2 is available digitally on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch and PC, but it’s getting a physical version for consoles in November. The boxed edition comes with the original Risk of Rain and its sequel, showcasing the franchise’s seamless jump from 2D to 3D. It costs just $30 on PS4 and Xbox One or $40 on Switch. — J.C.

Avengers Endgame 4K Blu-ray

Avengers: Endgame arrived in theaters earlier this year, but the 4K Blu-ray version only dropped in August. If an avid Marvel film fan on your holiday list hasn’t managed to pick up this Blu-ray yet, it’s well worth adding to their collection. The film is an epic follow-up to its slightly less acclaimed precursor, Avengers: Infinity War. Heck, if your giftee has been lax about collecting them, you may as well get both. As usual, the package includes both the physical disc and a digital code, so owners can enjoy the uncompressed media experience while also having the freedom to watch on the fly from various digital platforms. Permanent Record (Edward Snowden)

It charts his childhood instinct for gaming the system (case in point: changing the time on clocks in the family house to stay up late) as well as his path from the army to the CIA to becoming an NSA contractor. Then, of course, is the the play-by-play of his whistle-blowing. The memoir is a glimpse at what it took to reveal the extent of digital mass surveillance, a phenomenon that six years after Snowden’s revelations, we all accept as normal. — C.I.

The Boys Omnibus Vol. 1-4 (Garth Ennis)

If the sci-fi fan on your list is big on antiheroes but not so much space adventures, introduce them to The Boys. This four-volume graphic novel series from Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson tells of a world dominated by corrupt superhuman “heroes” and the corporate powers that control them. The only ones willing and able to stand up in this dystopia are a motley team of special operatives, assassins and one poor schmuck in way over his head. This story is a must-read, but be warned: Things get real bloody, real quick. — A.T.

Tools for Thought (Howard Rheingold)

For tech enthusiasts who usually have their eye on the future, there’s an easily consumable read on computing’s history written by Howard Rheingold called Tools for Thought. He covers some of the key figures in the history of coding and tech going much further back than the 1970s homebrew explosion in Silicon Valley. The book was originally published in 1985, and as a futurist, Rheingold tried to imagine what was coming next. That provides an interesting quirk, reading his predictions and perspective after the fact while he was in the middle of technology’s still-emerging story. This updated version, released in 2000, has an afterward with interviews including some of the document’s key players, helping to close the circle, at least for now. — J.T.

Hackers of the world unite and give Cult of the Dead Cow to the white hat on your gift list. This is a fantastic oral history of one of the world’s most powerful and prolific hacking collectives. Murderbot Diaries (Martha Wells)

If you’ve ever thought your loved ones spend too much time watching Netflix and should really pick up a book once in a while, the Murderbot Diaries might be right up their alley. Overall, the film is a wild ride with Mysterio’s mind games and immersive Dolby Atmos audio making it a spectacle to behold. Plus, it’s a recent Blu-ray release, so there’s a strong chance your intended hasn’t snagged it for themselves yet. If this film is still missing in your giftee’s collection, it’s a timely and affordable idea for someone with the home theater system to let it sing. — J.T.

Us 4K Blu-ray

It’s a film about a family and a vacation — perfect for the holidays, right? But truly, Jordan Peele’s Us is not only one of the best films of the year but also a chilling reflection on our divided times. Just look at the title: It speaks to an us-and-them mentality and doubles as the acronym for “United States.” Consider it a sly present if discussing current affairs head on is the real scare at your holiday get-togethers. — C.I.

Detective Pikachu 4K Blu-ray

There are few things as fun as sitting down to watch a cute family movie that’s as entertaining for adults as it is for kids. And there’s something for everyone in Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, now available on 4K Blu-ray. For grown-ups, it’s a pretty serious film noir about a boy looking for his lost father. For kids, his sidekick is a bright yellow mouse that shoots electricity out of its rear.

The story is interesting enough, but you’re really there to be swept away by the charm of Ryan Reynolds. Since you can’t play Deadpool in the family room, this will have to do as the next best thing. Plus, there are enough knowing winks and gags to keep everyone entertained between action set pieces. The fact that it’s based on a spin-off is a bonus, since showing how Pokémon battles would play out in the real world might look like animal cruelty. — Daniel Cooper, Senior Editor

Disney+

Regardless of who’s on your holiday list, chances are they’ll find something to watch on Disney+. The company’s much-hyped and long-awaited streaming service is finally here, and it mixes up compelling original content from the Star Wars and Marvel universes with an insanely vast back catalog, including films from Pixar, Disney’s recent Fox acquisition, those aforementioned Star Wars and Marvel films and — of course — a huge selection of Disney films from the past 80 years. One of the best ways to keep stress levels in check is to take a few minutes to breathe and center yourself. There are plenty of apps out there for guided meditation, but we especially like Headspace. It’s available on mobile and desktop, and it works with Google Home- and Alexa-powered devices, so wherever your frazzled friend is, they’ll be able to snag some self-care time.

For those who might be intimidated, Headspace is loaded with simple explanations and cute animations that make meditation feel approachable. Why not give someone the gift of learning and help them start their resolutions in the best possible manner?

Hell, even if they’re not interested in learning the skills, simply listening to these people talk is worth the price. Each individual MasterClass course costs $90 and comes with, on average, three hours of video, a workbook and some exercises to complete. But for a one-off payment of $180, MasterClass becomes a Netflix of smart stuff for a whole year. Nintendo Switch Online

It took Nintendo a long time to launch its online service, and as such there are probably lots of Switch owners who still don’t have it yet. If there’s a gamer in your life who matches that description, now is a good time to get them on board, especially if they’re a fan of retro games. In addition to being required for online play, Nintendo’s Switch Online service now includes dozens of games from the classic NES and Super NES systems, making it a great machine for a nostalgia binge.

Old games aren’t the only draw though. Earlier this year, Nintendo released Tetris 99, an online battle royale reimagining of the classic puzzle game — and only Switch online players could try it. At $20 for a full year of membership, it’s a no-brainer. Are you gifting someone a shiny new Switch Lite this year? If so, throw this in and enjoy extra brownie points. — N.I.

IMAX Enhanced optimizes whatever you’re watching to the standards that the filmmaker originally intended, all from the comfort of your home. Films are specially mastered for maximum display, sound and scale, with a big-screen aspect ratio for the IMAX bits you’d otherwise go to the movies to enjoy.

The launch kicks off with Spider-Man: Far from Home, which will feature 45 minutes of IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio, as well as Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, The Angry Birds Movie 2 and others. As with all of FandangoNow’s content, titles are available to buy or rent — no subscription required. Additional devices and further titles will be added to its IMAX Enhanced offering in the coming months.

Insomniac has been in business for more than two decades and has collaborated with Sony from its start, releasing Spyro in 1998 and following up with the likes of Ratchet & Clank and Sunset Overdrive. “Our studio vision is to create experiences that have a positive and lasting impact on people’s lives,” Insomniac CEO Ted Price wrote in a blog post Monday. “As we look ahead to our future, we know that joining the WWS family gives us the best opportunities to fully achieve that vision on a much larger scale.”

On the games front, you can snag discounts on newcomers such as Anthem ($30, but $24 on Amazon), Days Gone (down from $60 to $40), Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice ($48), Kingdom Hearts III ($36 or $30 on Amazon) and the Resident Evil 2 remake ($36). Other big hitters have discounts as well, including NBA 2K19 ($3), Spider-Man ($20), God of War ($20), Hitman 2 ($24), Mortal Kombat 11 ($50), Red Dead Redemption 2 ($39 or $35 on Amazon), Grand Theft Auto V ($15), The Division 2 ($39) and the Shadow of the Colossus remake ($13).

Most importantly, though, the feeling of actually controlling Spider-Man is fantastic. Fighting bad guys and swinging through NYC is both easy to learn and hard to master, but the rewards for doing so are vast. After a few hours, I felt like I had complete control over Spidey, swinging between skyscrapers with equal parts abandon and precision. Of course, as the game goes on you get more powerful and capable, with a host of gadgets, fight moves and improved skills for traversing the city. The enemy difficulty scales up alongside your progression, so while I felt much more confident handling large swarms of baddies, they could still turn the tables on me pretty fast if I wasn’t careful.

NYC itself is beautifully rendered and loaded with tons of real-life landmarks (as well as plenty of visual Easter eggs for Marvel fans). I wish that you could interact more with some of those locations, but it’s all fairly surface level — you can’t really explore the interior of any buildings outside of those that a mission specifically points you to. But as a backdrop and constant companion in your adventures, the NYC cityscape (along with shifting weather and lighting conditions) is a beauty to behold.

Probably the highest compliment that I can give Spider-Man is that I completed every mission the game threw at me, and now I’m extremely ready to start the DLC. I don’t “100 percent” games very often, but the world that developer Insomniac Games built is so much fun to swing through that even once I completed the main story, I was happy to keep exploring, helping citizens and enjoying the wonderfully-rendered vision of NYC. Now that I’ve finished the game, it’s time to take everything I learned and give New Game Plus and the Ultimate difficulty mode a shot.

Just Cause 3

First, the caveats: I’m not a gamer, and so anyone who wants to get sniffy about my discovery of a title from 2015 can shut up. The bulk of my time is taken up with a house, a job and two lovely children, and the amount of time I spend gaming is close to zero. The PS4 I picked up for my TV more than a year ago has been used a handful of times, mostly to suffer through FIFA 19.

A dearth of free time means that I like my games to be fun, rather than tests of endurance or my ability to remember a sequence of button presses. Back when I was still rocking an Xbox 360, the last single-player game I was really immersed in was Far Cry 3. I loved playing that game, an open-world FPS in which you liberate towns, until it turned on me.

Sadly, the game has an infamous mission — Doppelganger — that forces you to endure all of the most obdurate cliches of stealth games. Like crawling, on hands-and-knees, behind a guard as they wander about on their patrol and timing your moves to perfection. It’s the sort of challenge that I despise, especially since it’s so inflexible, so I ragequit the game and never played again.

Thankfully, providence (and the bargain bin at my local retailer) delivered what can only be described as Far Cry without its ADD meds: Just Cause 3. The premise is alarmingly similar, as your character travels around a tropical location, liberating settlements from an evil militia. Except that, in Just Cause, the player is essentially a superhero, zooming around in defiance of the laws of physics.

Equipped with a grapple, wingsuit and parachute, you can bounce across the terrain without ever driving a car. In fact, creativity is rewarded as you get bonus points for the more chaotic and artful destruction you can create. And, judging from what I’ve seen on YouTube, it’s entirely possible to beat a level non-violently, provoking the enemy into destroying its own bases.

The game offers moments that are simply too fun to play that you can’t help but giggle as you escape near-certain doom. Like when I was standing on a guard tower that an RPG blew up, with me and the guard sliding down the floor as it fell 90 degrees. Rather than plummet to my doom, however, I pushed off and used the momentum to rappel onto a nearby helicopter. James Bond, eat your heart out.

Just Cause 3 has its problems, like the fact that on my vanilla PS4 the game often slows to a crawl. If you blow up something spectacularly enough, the resulting chaos is too much for the console’s silicon. That, however, means you’re likely to get gunned down in a hail of bullets before you’re able to rappel away to safety. And, when you do die, the interminable loading times punish you for having the temerity to die in the first place.

There’s also the fact that the gameplay can get pretty repetitive once you’ve learned your metier in the early stages. Liberating towns and villages basically entails leaping between rooftops and yanking down the “chaos items” with your grapple. Military bases, meanwhile, are a little more run-and-gun, but if you have an RPG, defeating one is relatively easy.

But when you’re about to launch head-first into an action set piece and Henry Jackman’s score kicks in, you can’t help but grin.
