<div>
<p>It&#8217;ll work similarly to the <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2018/05/18/chromecast-skip-show-introductions-netflix/">&#8220;Skip Intro&#8221;</a> or &#8220;Next Episode&#8221; prompts you already see on Netflix. Meyers, who brought the idea to Netflix, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2019/11/04/media/seth-meyers-skip-politics-button-netflix/index.html">told</a> <em>CNN </em>the button is just &#8220;another joke in the special&#8221; and shouldn&#8217;t be taken too seriously. In fact, he doesn&#8217;t think many folks will actually use it.</p>
<p>Netflix has tried out other <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2018/12/13/netflix-tests-instant-replays-for-scenes/">interactive features</a>, such as with <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2019/09/22/2019-emmy-awards/"><em>Black Mirror: Bandersnatch</em></a> and the <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2018/11/27/minecraft-story-mode-netflix/"><em>Minecraft: Story Mode</em></a> game. While the Trump joke button might not have quite the same level of complexity, it&#8217;s a fun use of Netflix&#8217;s tech that&#8217;s unlikely to <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2019/10/29/netflix-responds-variable-playback/">cause as much commotion</a> as <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2019/10/25/netflix-variable-playback-android/">its test of variable playback speeds</a>.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll be able to try the button when <em>Lobby Baby </em>hits Netflix Tuesday. More broadly, it&#8217;s worth considering whether Netflix will adopt a &#8220;Skip Scene&#8221; button for other purposes. Earlier this year, it <a href="https://twitter.com/netflix/status/1116024755356749824">warned <em>Our Planet</em> viewers</a> about possibly upsetting scenes they might want to zip past. It&#8217;s not impossible to imagine Netflix adding a button to skip potentially distressing sections of shows or movies.</p>

<p>Netflix has released many stand-up specials over the years with the likes of <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2016/10/14/netflix-reportedly-spent-40-million-on-chris-rock/">Chris Rock,</a> <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2018/09/04/ellen-degeneres-netflix-comedy-special-december-18/">Ellen DeGeneres,</a> <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2019/06/18/netflix-biggest-opening-weekend-murder-mystery/">Adam Sandler,</a> <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2019/07/19/netflix-eddie-murphy-stand-up-specials/">(possibly) Eddie Murphy</a> and <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2018/07/11/netflix-comedy-specials-around-the-world/">dozens of other comics</a> showcasing their talents on the platform. But competition <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/09/arts/television/jim-gaffigan-julio-torres.html">seems to be intensifying </a>among streaming services for comedians.</p>
<p>Amazon Prime released its first original stand-up sets this month, starting with one from Jim Gaffigan (his half-dozen other specials are currently on Netflix). HBO has a long, rich history of stand-up too, and it might well invest more resources there ahead of the <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2019/07/09/hbo-max/">HBO Max launch</a> in the spring. Still, few other comics have the star power of Chappelle.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.tmz.com/2019/07/19/eddie-murphy-netflix-comedy-special-stand-up/">According to</a> <em>TMZ</em>, Netflix may be willing to pay $70 million for an undisclosed number of specials. While that&#8217;s a huge figure, especially given reports about Netflix trying to be more conscientious <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2019/07/01/netflix-will-be-more-picky-with-big-budget-projects/">about the original content it spends big on</a>, that&#8217;s in line with what it paid other A-list comics. Dave Chappelle is said to have earned $60 million for <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2016/11/21/netflix-dave-chappelle-comedy-specials-2017/">a trio of specials</a>, which Chris Rock apparently <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2016/10/14/netflix-reportedly-spent-40-million-on-chris-rock/">scored a $40 million deal</a> for two of his own. Ellen DeGeneres, meanwhile, reportedly <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/maddieberg/2018/07/18/how-ellen-made-history-and-87-million-this-year/#3458884d1fa2">earned $20 million</a> for <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2018/09/04/ellen-degeneres-netflix-comedy-special-december-18/">her special</a>.</p>
<p>Netflix has long been <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2018/07/11/netflix-comedy-specials-around-the-world/">investing</a> in <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2019/06/19/netflix-renews-i-think-you-should-leave/">original comedy</a>, but it might be under a little more pressure to find hits and big names that will really move the needle. In <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2019/07/17/netflix-q2-2019-earnings-miss/">its latest earnings report</a>, Netflix said it had a net loss of US subscribers for the first time in years. Its user numbers still increased year-over-year, but it missed a key target. Subscribers grew by 2.7 million, though Netflix predicted around 5 million would join over the quarter.</p>
<p>Netflix is looking for ways to attract new subscribers and keep its existing ones without some popular third-party shows such as <em><a href="https://www.engadget.com/2019/06/25/the-office-netflix-nbc/">The Office</a></em> and <em><a href="https://www.engadget.com/2019/07/09/hbo-max/">Friends</a></em>, both of which will be departing for other streaming platforms in the not-too-distant future. It remains to be seen whether Eddie Murphy&#8217;s apparent return to stand-up will be a big enough hook for viewers.</p>
