Amazing Stories first aired on NBC in 1985. After just two seasons, it has taken a long and seemingly difficult path to make its way back onto TV screens. Reports that Apple and Spielberg were working together to revive the series first came out in 2017. It seems to have suffered production delays along the way, with showrunner Bryan Fuller (of Star Trek: Discovery and American Gods fame) departing in 2018.

We’ll have to wait to see how the series turns out, but it’s clear Apple needs more interesting content to make TV+ compelling. Besides The Morning Show and For All Mankind, there haven’t been a lot of reasons to revisit the service — even if Apple has been generous about giving out free trials.

This time around, the source material comes from historian Donald Miller’s book of the same name. Masters of the Air documents the contributions of airmen from the 8th Air Force during World War II. The 8th Air Force was the largest of the air components the US army deployed in western Europe. It took part in both the invasion of Normandy and the bombing of Dresden. Spielberg and Hanks had been trying to adapt Masters of the Air with HBO since at least 2013. According to Variety, John Orloff, who worked on Band of Brothers (he penned the series’ emotional “Why We Fight” episode) is writing the script for Masters of the Air.

Notably, after House of Cards, this marks the second major series HBO has lost to one of its streaming competitors, though this one comes as less of a surprise since Apple and Spielberg were already working together on Amazing Stories. Apple TV+ will launch on November 1st with a $4.99 per month price tag.

It centers on a bunch of teens at an adventure camp who will, unless there are some terrible creative decisions at play, have to survive the threat of dinosaurs. Jurassic Park director and franchise producer Steven Spielberg and Colin Trevorrow, who directed Jurassic World, are among the executive producers. There’s no word on casting as yet, so it remains to be seen whether Jurassic Park/World stars such as Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard or Jeff Goldblum will pop up.

“We support the theatrical experience as integral to the art of motion pictures, and this weighed heavily in our discussions,” Academy President John Bailey said in a statement. “Our rules currently require theatrical exhibition, and also allow for a broad selection of films to be submitted for Oscars consideration.”

Netflix made history at this year’s Oscar ceremony with Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma, which won three awards, including best director for Cuaron. The historic event also raised concerns in some circles of Hollywood elite that streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon and Hulu would soon take over traditional motion picture productions. But speculation that Academy board member Steven Spielberg would push for longer theatrical release requirements in order to bar Netflix from the Oscars turned out to be unfounded. Spielberg later clarified in a statement that while he wants to preserve the movie theatre experience, he wants people to “find entertainment in any form or fashion that suits them.”

Even if Spielberg had gone forth with an anti-Netflix campaign, it likely would meet legal obstacles. The Department of Justice informed the Academy earlier this month that any change to eligibility rules that barred the streaming platforms could be in violation of antitrust laws. So it appears that Netflix and the other online streaming platforms will continue to have a place on the red carpet, even if not all Hollywood moguls don’t like it.

Spielberg hasn’t really said anything, according to Katzenberg. The industry figure also denied that Spielberg was heading to the Academy governing board meeting in April with an agenda to thwart streaming movies.

Provided the remarks accurately reflect of Spielberg’s intentions, they suggest that Netflix, Amazon and others won’t have to worry about their chances for Roma-level critical glory at the 2020 Oscars. Whether or not that’s true in the long run is less than certain. While it’s still relatively novel for streaming movies to win the most prestigious awards, they may compete more frequently in the future. That could increase pressure on the Academy to change the rules and keep theater-focused movies in the limelight.
