Each of the vehicles will travel through the athletes’ village at a leisurely 12 miles per hour along a designated loop. As an SAE Level 4-capable autonomous vehicle, the e-Palette will be able to navigate the area all on its own. However, a safety attendant will be onboard each vehicle to ensure nothing goes wrong. Those capabilities put the e-Palette in about the same ballpark as Waymo’s current fleet of autonomous vehicles.

Toyota adds that it consulted with athletes to adapt the vehicle to their needs. It can transport up to four passengers in wheelchairs at the same time, and includes an electric ramp to facilitate easy and quick boarding. The automaker also made the interior elements of the Tokyo 2020 Version contrast to help colorblind individuals.

The company will also have a smaller version of the vehicle, called the Field Support Robot, at throwing events to move shot puts and javelins. For Toyota, the e-Palette, in all its various forms, will serve as marketing for the company’s technical abilities. In an interview with Engadget from CES 2018, CEO Akio Toyoda said what he’s most afraid of is companies like Google coming into the automotive space. The e-Palette is the company’s bet that it can not only survive but succeed against tech’s big juggernauts.

NBC previously worked with Snapchat for the 2018 Winter Games, offering some live coverage and highlights packages through the Discover tab. Still, this is the biggest step the Comcast subsidiary has taken to date in terms of allowing a partner to use live Olympics video, the New York Times notes.

There’s an interactive element here. Each morning, you can vote on which primetime event or athlete you want to see on Twitter, and live streams lasting five minutes or so will be broadcast on the platform. Advertisers will also be able to sponsor the Twitter coverage.

Of course, the vast majority of NBC’s Olympics coverage will stay on its own networks and digital platforms. The event is an important revenue stream for NBCUniversal; it expects to rake in over $1.2 billion in ad sales during next year’s Games.

Most of the other bots were already known, such as the Human Support Robot (for guiding people to their seats), the Delivery Support Robot (drinks and other orders) and the T-HR3 humanoid robot (remote interactions with athletes).

However, there will be one more Olympics-specific bot. The Mascot Robot in Miraitowa and Someity variants (you’re looking at Someity below) will welcome people to venues through object detection and remote-controlled limbs. Toyota is also “considering” a way to enhance the games for Japanese kids through the mascot machines.

The robots serve as marketing material for Toyota and Japan’s technology industry as a whole. Like other Japanese worker robots, though, they’re also an acknowledgment of the country’s labor shortages. With a declining population and a reluctance to invite foreign workers, the country can’t always count on having enough people to fill jobs. The Field Support Robot and its peers could ensure that Tokyo 2020 proceeds without a hitch, even if there aren’t as many human staffers as the organizers would like.

More robots will handle tasks at the games, the organizers said, with news coming later.

The committee isn’t shy about its aims: this is about showing off Japan’s prowess with robots at a moment when the world will be watching. It’ll demonstrate the “practical, real-life deployment” of the technology, project leader Hirohisa Hirukawa said. At the same time, it’s also representative of the country’s social issues. Japan’s recent focus on worker robots is meant partly to cope with a declining population that limits its employment options. These robots might be needed to ensure that humans are free to take on other roles.
