The company is testing the feature worldwide in Facebook Groups during certain sports events, including UEFA Champions League matches. It’ll eventually spread to “all kinds of live events and cultural moments,” Facebook said, citing award shows and premieres as likely candidates.

Facebook isn’t just catering to TV junkies today — it’s also courting music fans. If you attach a song to your profile, you can give visitors an option to listen to the full song on Spotify (see below). More music partners will be available in the “near future,” according to Facebook, so you might not be out of luck if you or your friends prefer other services.

It may seem unusual for Facebook to enable Watch Party for videos that aren’t even online, but this appears to be more about capturing your attention than making money. If you stay in a Facebook space while you’re watching the big game, you might be more likely to stay on the service for after-match discussions.

You can apply for the company’s Prototype Program now, although we’ll be honest: the chances are slim that you’ll get in. Twitter only plans to invite roughly 2,000 English and Japanese speakers at this stage, and there’s only mention of supporting iOS so far. The one consolation is that those users can share their experiences. If Twitter starts tinkering with a major change, you’ll know what it looks like before it reaches the regular app.

It’s not going to see widespread adoption, then, but it could still be significant. Twitter frequently talks about making major changes, but there’s rarely much official interaction with the public before the features reach the beta test stage — that is, when they’re nearly ready. The Twttr app could give the public more input into these changes and offer more insight into Twitter’s thinking.

Some of the material you see will be original, but Oppenheim added that News Now will pull material from the “other corners” of NBCUniversal, including E News and sports.

The service will be entering a competitive field. ABC News Live is the most obvious rival due to its relatively recent launch, but there’s also the long-serving CBSN as well as online-focused outlets like Cheddar. NBC might not have much choice, as Oppenheim pointed out. People’s news habits are “changing rapidly,” he said — if NBC didn’t act, it might miss out on viewers who have no inclination to tune in to conventional TV.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the script depicts Spiegel as a hard partier in his college days who elbowed out one of the app’s original programmers, replacing her with a male counterpart. One part of the script even shows the Snap chief exchanging text messages with Taylor Swift. “Hamptons?” the singer asked in the screenplay, to which Spiegel replied: “Want to be straight with you, I don’t have time for a relationship rn.” He also told Swift to “[f]eel free to write a song,” and that didn’t sit well with the artist who responded with a crisp “Fuck you, Evan.”

“We want to tell a story that’s as compelling and interesting about Snapchat and Evan as The Social Network was for Facebook,” Katzenberg said at SXSW. When the moderator during his panel said Snap HQ is feeling alarmed about the project, Katzenberg said that Spiegel “should be flattered” instead.

The film exec has also revealed that they’re planning to launch Quibi in April 2020 and that they’re aiming to publish over 100 pieces of content every week. That doesn’t necessarily mean the platform will run as many as 100 titles all at once, though, since it will break long-form content into shorter pieces for easier consumption on a smaller screen.
