The Messages app on the Mac has lagged behind its iOS equivalent for a long time — it’s good for answering text messages without reaching for your iPhone, but many of the features and effects are missing. It might catch up this year, though. The 9to5Mac team has discovered hints of an overhauled Messages app for macOS in leaked iOS 14 code. The new software is reportedly a Catalyst-based app that will effectively mirror what you see in the iOS and iPadOS versions. You could chat with someone on their iPhone without worrying that you’ll miss part of the conversation, even if it’s just a fanciful sticker.

There aren’t definitive clues as to when this Messages revamp would arrive, although history suggests it’ll be unveiled alongside the next version of macOS at WWDC in June, with the finished software reaching users in the fall.

The company locked down the database on November 29th, a day after vpnMentor got in touch. It’s not clear how long the database was left exposed, however, or whether there was any unauthorized access. We’ve asked TrueDialog for comment.

The exposed messages aren’t going to include private conversations, but they still pose a risk. If malicious intruders accessed the database, they could have used some of the information for phishing scams and fraud. For businesses, the exposure was at least as bad — it could have let attackers hijack accounts, learn about confidential activity and even steal sales leads. This may have also given unscrupulous competitors insight into how TrueDialog works.

The hiccup appears to be the result of a common carrier infrastructure glitch. T-Mobile told Engadget this was a “third party vendor issue that also affected other networks,” while US Cellular told 92 Moose that a flawed update to the “cross carrier messaging system” was to blame. Sprint, meanwhile, pinned the issue on a “maintenance update.” We’ve reached out to AT&T and Verizon (Engadget’s parent company) as well. Carriers haven’t gone into detail about what went wrong, though, so it’s not clear why the texts resurfaced or what prevented at least some of them from being delivered in the first place.

T-Mobile and Sprint both said the issue has been fixed, so you shouldn’t have to worry about more of these mystery texts. However, the issue was serious enough to have created some confusion. One user said she received a text from her now ex-boyfriend, while another got a message from a best friend that had passed away later in February. It’s a not-so-subtle reminder that even relatively innocuous glitches like this can have real-world consequences.
