Last week, CEO Ted Sarandos rejected the idea of a film industry pushback. “A pushback? Nobody can say that with a straight face, he told the New York Times. “We got 24 nominations, the most of any studio. Our films have been honored across the board.” However, given that the streaming service spent $70 million lobbying for its films, the resulting lack of Oscars (and Globes) has to considered a failure.

Netflix wasn’t the only studio feeling the sting of losing, however, as best picture favorites 1917 and Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood failed to take the big trophy. Instead, Parasite became the first foreign language film to win best picture, and swept other major awards: best director for Bong Joon-ho, best original screenplay and best international feature. “I’m ready to drink tonight,” joked Bong.

Other major awards went to traditional studios, with Joaquin Phoenix winning best actor for Joker, Renee Zellweger taking the best actress prize for Judy and Brad Pitt taking best actor in a supporting role for Once upon a Time… in Hollywood. Toy Story won for best animated feature and, as expected, Roger Deakins took the cinematography prize for 1917. For the complete list of winners, check here.

Netflix revealed that tally in a tweet, and content chief Ted Sarandos told Deadline that in the film’s first 28 days, it’s expected to reach about 40 million household accounts.
The Irishman, which debuted at and opened the New York Film Festival, has already received five Golden Globe nominations, and Netflix is likely hoping it will be an Oscar contender.

With Disney+ (The Mandalorian) and Apple TV+ getting so much attention lately, Netflix is likely happy to have something to boast about. Though, just because a film racks up Netflix views, doesn’t mean it’s good. Just a few months ago, the Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston film Murder Mystery broke the Netflix record for most unique account views (30.8 million) in its first three days, though that was before Baby Yoda existed.

The Critics Choice nominations were dominated by Netflix, with 61 nominations for its movies and TV shows — 14 of them just for The Irishman, which is up for top awards like Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. Other streaming services also fared better, including Amazon Prime Video (14), Hulu (seven) and CBS All Access (four). It’s more than a little obvious that Apple is a newcomer with just a handful of shows under its belt.

Apple will quickly find out whether there are any more potential awards in the pipeline. The Golden Globe nominations will appear the morning of December 9th (that’s tomorrow if you’re reading in time). If The Morning Show or other Apple TV+ productions get nods there, that could serve as a big confidence booster. It won’t be the end if Apple comes up empty-handed, but it would make clear that Apple needs to flesh out its selection before it can compete with streaming veterans at awards galas.

While Netflix didn’t disclose the terms of the lease, it did say that it plans to use the space for special events and screenings, as well as to show its own movies. Netflix has been showing films like The Irishman and The King in theaters so that they can qualify for the Oscars.

This isn’t Netflix’s first foray into traditional cinemas. Since April, the company has been working on a deal to take over the historic Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles. Netflix has also reportedly considered buying a small chain like Landmark Theatres. For Netflix, investing in small, historic theaters makes a lot of sense as it tries to shore up relations with older filmmakers. Last year, Steven Spielberg said the company’s films should be considered television instead of film. One of his main arguments was that movies shouldn’t qualify for the Oscars if they only run in cinemas for a few weeks. A theater like the Paris allows Netflix to both address those concerns and create goodwill with movie buffs.

MARRIAGE STORY will continue its run at the historic theater. The next time someone tells you LA “has more space,” just tell them New York has the latest Noah Baumbach at the Paris.

It’s unclear which theaters will run the film, given that it has such a short theatrical release. Major chains, like AMC and Regal, tend to expect longer theatrical runs, typically around 90 days, before films are available on streaming services. The Irishman will be available exclusively in theaters for just 26 days. The rollout has been compared to that of Alfonso Curaon’s Roma, which screened in approximately 250 theaters in the US. Of course, the history-making collaboration between Scorsese, De Niro, Pesci and Pacino will likely draw people to theaters even in that short, three-week period.
