Most notably, one of the sources claims you won’t get the full series of The Office (and possibly other shows) if you stick to the free tier. While that’s unfortunate if you’re hoping to avoid paying for yet another streaming subscription, it could make sense from a business standpoint. NBC not only has to recoup the $500 million it used to buy The Office, but give subscribers a reason to pay besides eliminating ads. Peacock will have originals, but they might not be enough.

NBC has so far declined to comment.

It’s long been known that Peacock will be an ad-supported platform (with between three and five minutes of ads per hour) and that cable subscribers and Comcast broadband users wouldn’t have to pay extra for access. However, a report suggests NBCU might pull the trigger on making Peacock available to everyone at no cost, though a paid subscription may be an option for ad-free viewing.

Comcast and other pay-TV subscribers might get extra benefits, such as additional content, according to CNBC sources. As it stands, Peacock is scheduled to include more than 15,000 hours of shows and movies, including Parks and Recreation, Cheers and new shows from The Good Place creator Mike Schur and Saturday Night Live chief Lorne Michaels. The Office will be a Peacock streaming exclusive from 2021.

You can expect other originals, including reboots of Battlestar Galactica, Saved by the Bell and Punky Brewster. There’ll be plenty of other shows and movies from across the NBCUniversal brands as well.

While there are other ad-supported, on-demand streaming services around, if Peacock takes that approach, it’d be the only such platform run by a major media company to do so. As such, it’d surely pick up a host of users who might not want to pay subscriptions for other services. HBO Max, for instance, will cost $15/month. Netflix costs from $9/month, Hulu starts at $6 (with ads), Apple TV+ costs $5, Disney+ will be $7 and Amazon charges $9/month for Prime Video.

Planned originals for the service include Battlestar Galactica (from Mr. Robot‘s Sam Esmail), Saved by the Bell (by Great News‘ Tracey Wigfield) and Punky Brewster reboots. Other original shows include Dr. Death (with Alec Baldwin, Jamie Dornan and Christian Slater), Demi Moore vehicle Brave New World and Rutherford Falls, co-created by The Good Place‘s Michael Schur and starring Ed Helms. Elsewhere, there’ll be the limited series Angelyne (with Emmy Rossum) and another Psych movie spinoff. On the unscripted side, there are Saturday Night Live docuseries Who Wrote That, a weekly talk show with Amber Ruffin and a Real Housewives spinoff.

You might not see any of those when Peacock debuts though. NBCUniversal is planning a huge marketing drive for the service during the Summer Olympics, and it’ll premiere original series after the games, according to the Hollywood Reporter. There’ll be some Olympics content on Peacock too.

Naturally, there’ll be a big focus on library shows from across the NBCUniversal empire. Among those you’ll be able to watch on Peacock at the outset, many of which will later become streaming exclusives, are 30 Rock, Bates Motel, Battlestar Galactica, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Cheers, Chrisley Knows Best, Covert Affairs, Downton Abbey, Everybody Loves Raymond, Frasier, Friday Night Lights, House, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, King of Queens, Married … With Children, Monk, Parenthood, Psych, Royal Pains, SNL, Superstore, The Real Housewives, Top Chef and Will & Grace.

You’ll also be able to catch a string of movies, though those won’t be exclusive. Among the initial flicks are the Fast and Furious, Bourne and Despicable Me franchises, along with American Pie, Bridesmaids, Knocked Up, Meet the Parents, Meet the Fockers, A Beautiful Mind, Back to the Future, Brokeback Mountain, Casino, Dallas Buyers Club, Do the Right Thing, Erin Brockovich, E.T., Field of Dreams, Jaws, Mamma Mia, Shrek and The Breakfast Club.

Peacock will also have more than 3,000 hours of material from Telmundo, including library titles and original dramedy Armas de Mujer. There’ll be sports and news offerings too, which NBCUniversal will detail later.

Peacock’s pricing and launch date details will be revealed down the line. It’ll be US-only at first, though NBCUniversal eventually plans to expand it worldwide.

Wondering what the most watched show on subscription streaming is? According to NBC it’s The Office, and as such, it’s no surprise that once the company’s agreement with Netflix expires at the end of 2020, it’s keeping the show for its own streaming service. The ad-supported NBCUniversal package is launching in 2020, but it won’t have the show’s nine seasons until 2021.

It’s following a trend we’ve seen from AT&T and Disney, as they try to capitalize on back catalogs to launch new streaming competitors. Of course, for viewers it means they won’t be able to see popular shows all in one place, and it’s unclear how this will impact international distribution. In response, Netflix tweeted that at least members can binge watch “ad-free” until January 2021.
