The Pokémon Company announced a bunch of games and updates this morning and somehow we still didn’t get a release date for Pokémon Sleep. In fact, it wasn’t mentioned at all. However, the company did showcase at least one lifestyle/health-related app, Pokémon Smile. It’s a game that helps your kids brush your teeth. Yes, it’s as cute as it sounds.

It’s an augmented reality application that will put a Pokémon cap on your kid’s head, and then task them with rescuing creatures like Pikachu, Eevee and Bulbasaur by brushing all the purple gunk off a set of teeth on screen. The Pokémon can then be captured and leveled up, because well, it is still a Pokémon game. 

Before you ask: there aren’t any in-app purchases, at least not at this stage.

The Pokémon Company isn’t shy about its goals with producing Facebook titles. This is about making Pokémon games available to “people all over the world” who otherwise couldn’t (or wouldn’t) play. For Facebook, meanwhile, this is a big boost to an Instant Games platform that only has so many big titles under its belt. You certainly won’t put down your Switch in favor of these games, but they could give you a reason to check out Facebook Gaming where you might otherwise ignore it.

It is true that many of those downloads came shortly after the game’s launch. The creators were celebrating the 500 million mark in September 2016, or just weeks after its debut. Growth has clearly been much slower since — it’s just that the game managed to keep and foster its player base well after others gave it a pass.

The figure illustrates the challenge Harry Potter: Wizards Unite faces in gaining widespread adoption. There are legions of Pokémon Go players, and they might not be in a rush to take on a second game that plays like the one they already know. With that said, Pokémon‘s endurance shows precisely why you can’t rule out success for other Niantic games, even if they don’t quite become cultural phenomenons.

Whichever version you buy, you’ll have to deal with yet another new mechanic: Gigantamaxing. Unlike Dynamaxing, which ‘just’ makes Pokémon bigger and boosts their stats, certain creatures (such as Corviknight and Drednaw) will change appearance as they grow and gain access to a special G-Max Move. You won’t just want to stick to your familiar battlers, then, as you might miss out on some particularly effective attacks.

Throw in new Pokémon like the dessert-inspired Alcremie, Yamper the corgi, the coal-like Rolycoly and the steel Duraludon and there should be a healthy variety in the series’ first proper Switch titles, even if some of your critters won’t carry over. It may just be a question of whether or not the gameplay translates well to Nintendo’s current console.

If you’re used to advancing your Pokémon Go game with an Apple Watch, you’ll want to change your habits. Niantic is ending support for the Apple Watch after July 1st — beyond that, you can’t connect your watch to the creature-catching game. Simply put, it’s not as useful any more. Now that Adventure Sync can track steps, earn Buddy Candy and hatch Pokémon on your phone, Niantic wants to “focus” on using the feature on one device instead of splitting your attention.

So how will the Pokémon Company and Niantic follow up Pokémon Go? At a press conference today they revealed Pokémon Sleep, a new mobile game that tracks your time sleeping to unlock new characters. It’s being made by Pokémon Magikarp developer Select Button. There’s also some new hardware with a Pokémon Go Plus + that works as a sleep tracker, and has the function of the Pokémon Go Plus accessory for use with that game.
