After missing its initial March 19th release date, Konami’s TurboGrafx-16 mini will finally make its way to North America on May 22nd. When it becomes available next Friday, you’ll be able to pick it up for $100. 

At the start of March, Konami delayed the TurboGrafx-16 mini’s US and Canadian launch due to the coronavirus pandemic. At the time, the company said the outbreak had caused an “unavoidable suspension” at the facility in China where it was manufacturing the device. There’s still no release date for the CoreGrafx mini, the console’s European variant. However, Konami said it’s keeping an eye on the situation.

Konami said in a statement on Twitter that “the manufacturing and shipping facilities in China have encountered an unavoidable suspension due to the current coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. As a result, the delivery of all PC Engine Core Grafx mini products, which was originally scheduled for March 19th, 2020, will be delayed until further notice.” This news isn’t shocking — some factories in China have already shut down due to coronavirus fears and infections.

The TurboGrafx-16 mini and PC Engine Core Grafx mini seem like they could be promising products. The North American and European versions of the system include some fantastic games like Ys Book I & II, and the Japanese version has a few PC Engine grails like Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire. However, it all comes down to how well the emulator handles these games.

With the mini consoles delayed and no signs of the coronavirus epidemic slowing down, gamers are probably wondering if the production of PS5 and Xbox Series X will be able to stay on track for their intended releases this fall. The new systems likely aren’t scheduled to enter the production phase until late summer, but if the outbreak doesn’t abate by then, Sony and Microsoft could be forced to delay the consoles.

The US lineup includes already-teased games like R-Type and Ys Book I & II, not to mention other top titles like Bonk’s Revenge and Space Harrier. On the PC Engine side, you’ll have big titles like Castlevania: Rondo of Blood (Akumajo Dracula X Chi No Rondo), Ghouls ‘n Ghosts (Daimakaimura) and Ninja Gaiden (Ninja Rykenden), among others. Kotaku noted that you’ll even get a previously very rare game, the shoot-em-up Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire.

There’s no US pricing yet, although the Japanese version costs roughly $100. That’s a lot to pay if you aren’t completely sold on the games, especially with Nintendo and Sega systems in the mix. Look at it this way, though: if you wished you had a TurboGrafx when you were a kid but couldn’t get one the first time around, this is your chance to set things right.

Need a sign that the retro gaming console market just won’t come to an end? At E3 Konami just announced the TurboGrafx-16 mini, marking a return for the console that debuted in the US alongside the Sega Genesis in 1989, but never quite enjoyed the support or sales of its competitors. There’s no price or release date yet for this bit of late 80s / early 90s nostalgia, but when it is released it will include the requisite suite of throwback games including:

• R-Type
• New Adventure Island
• Ninja Spirit
• Ys Book I & II
• Dungeon Explorer
• Alien Crush

Other titles have yet to be revealed, and outside of North America the box will have different names (just like it did back in the day). In Europe it’s the PC Engine Core Grafx Mini, and in Japan, where the system originally launched in 1987, it’s just the PC Engine Mini. It’s unlikely we’ll see anything as groundbreaking as the original’s CD-ROM add-on — a first for consoles at the time — but it’s good to see the name in circulation again all the same.
