It’s been a busy year for Riot Games. The company has shipped Valorant, a first-person shooter inspired by Counter-Strike and Overwatch, Legends of Runeterra, a digital card game similar to Hearthstone and Magic the Gathering, and auto chess sensation Teamfight Tactics on iOS and Android. There’s one project that won’t be seeing the light of day in 2020, though: Arcane. Announced last October, the animated series — set in the same universe as Riot’s League of Legends MOBA — was supposed to come out sometime this year. Production has slowed during the coronavirus pandemic, however, and the company is now targeting a 2021 release date.

“Everyone here at Riot is bummed,” the company said in a blog post. “We were really looking forward to bringing you the show this year, but we need to balance our excitement for the story with the safety and well-being of our teams and partners.” Little is known about the project. A two-minute trailer confirmed that iconic champions (League of Legends‘ term for characters) such as Jinx and Vi will appear in the show. We don’t know much about the storyline, though, or how long the first season will be. Riot has confirmed, however, that it’s working with Fortiche Productions, a French animation studio that was involved with the viral Pop/Stars music video for virtual band K/DA, among other League of Legends projects.

The idea came about after O’Brien and staff produced several short videos for social media and realized the same tech could be employed for a full show. “We have a staff that wants to work, that doesn’t want to not get paid, and you just want to keep the business going,” Conan executive producer Jeff Ross told Variety.

So far, it seems that Conan will be the first late-night show to attempt complete shows from home. Others, including Stephen Cobert and Jimmy Fallon, are airing re-runs with some original segments mixed in. It might be a bit easier for Conan to pull that off, though, because it recently became a half-hour show while the latter two run for 60 minutes each.

Still, O’Brien warned viewers to expect the worst, given the lack of a polished studio and potential for technical snafus. “The quality of my work will not go down because technically that’s not possible,” he said. “This will not be pretty, but feel free to laugh at our attempt.”

In that book, New York Times reporter Mike Isaac tracks Uber from its creation through its IPO in May. The adaptation will “depict the roller-coaster ride of the upstart transportation company, embodying the highs and lows of Silicon Valley,” with co-founder and former CEO Travis Kalanick as a central figure.

“The story of Uber is rich in plot twists, one-of-a-kind personalities and important implications for corporate America,” Jana Winograde, co-president of entertainment at Showtime, said in a statement. “It is a case study of ingenuity and insanity, and there are no writers better suited than Brian and David to explore this business and the people who drive it, literally and metaphorically.”

It’s not clear when the limited series will debut. It joins several other screen adaptations of tech companies’ stories. The Social Network, of course, tackled the early days of Facebook, while shows based on the histories of Snapchat and Theranos are on the way to Quibi and Hulu respectively.
