Google is marking World Refugee Day by making it easier for the displaced to get the support they need. It’s working with the UNHCR to show “authoritative” answers in search to questions refugees might have, such as how to qualify for cash assistance and what happens during the refugee status interview. This ideally helps refugees get the support they need as quickly as possible and focus on starting life in a new country.

The answers are initially available in Arabic, English, Farsi and Turkish to help people in Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey. They represent the countries with the highest volume of refugees per capita, Google said. This won’t guarantee a smooth transition for every refugee, but it could save them the trouble of combing through information and might eliminate some anxiety at an already stressful time in their lives.

The team added that this was evidence of the problems with the unregulated sale and use of spyware for surveillance purposes. These tools should be governed by “the most rigorous control” to prevent abuse, and that there should be a “moratorium” on selling and transferring the technology.

Saudi Arabia has called the WhatsApp hack claim “absurd” and has previously rejected assertions that it has campaigns to hack, intimidate and assassinate critics. It insisted that Khashoggi’s murder was a “rogue operation” despite a CIA investigation implicating the Crown Prince’s involvement.

The UN can’t force a US investigation into the case. However, this does increase pressure on authorities to look into the allegations and treat this as more than just a typical data breach. It also puts Saudi Arabia under closer scrutiny. While the UN isn’t definitively blaming Saudi Arabia, it is acknowledging that the kingdom has a mounting reputation for using digital ‘warfare’ in a bid to silence opposing views.

South Korea appears to be the hardest hit country, suffering at least 10 attacks. India was the victim of three attacks, with Bangladesh and Chile the victim of two each. Meanwhile, Costa Rica, Gambia, Guatemala, Kuwait, Liberia, Malaysia, Malta, Nigeria, Poland, Slovenia, South Africa, Tunisia and Vietnam suffered one attack each.

The attacks were undertaken in three main ways: through the SWIFT system used to transfer money between banks; directly through exchanges and users to steal cryptocurrency; and by “cryptojacking” computers by infecting them with malware to use its resources to generate cryptocurrency.

In one unnamed country, for example, hackers managed to access the infrastructure managing its entire ATM system and installed malware modifying the way transactions are processed. In another country, stolen funds were “transferred through at least 5,000 separate transactions and further routed to multiple countries before eventual conversion” to a currency that a government has declared legal money, therefore making it extremely difficult to track the funds.

Meanwhile, South Korea’s cryptocurrency exchange, Bithumb, has been targeted at least four times. Two attacks in 2017 resulted in losses of around $7 million each, while a further two, in June 2018 and March 2019, lead to the loss of $31 million and $20 million respectively.

According to the report, many of these attacks are undertaken by actors operating under the direction of the Reconnaissance General Bureau — the General Bureau is North Korea’s military intelligence agency. The UN says that the attacks, which are “low risk and high yield” and often require little more than a laptop and internet access, are being investigated as attempts to violate UN sanctions.

“I would encourage Huawei to be given equal opportunities to bid for business, and during the operational process, if you find anything wrong, then you can charge them and accuse them,” Zhao said, according to Reuters. “But if we don’t have anything then to put them on the blacklist — I think this is not fair.”

The US has tried to dissuade allies including Canada and Italy from allowing Huawei to contribute to 5G networks in those nations, fearing China will use the conglomerate’s equipment to spy on those countries. For instance, it threatened to limit the intelligence it shares with Germany should that country permit carriers to use Huawei’s equipment. Huawei has rejected the US allegations. Australia, meanwhile, has blocked mobile providers from using Huawei tech over security worries. The UK has also expressed concern.

In his interview, Zhao didn’t touch on charges US federal prosecutors have brought against Huawei for allegedly violating sanctions against Iran and stealing trade secrets. The company pleaded not guilty to the charges. Meanwhile, it’s suing the US government for blocking federal agencies from using Huawei equipment.
