Trolls: World Tour isn’t the sort of film that one would expect to cause controversy but at the start of the COVID pandemic, AMC and Universal got themselves into a knock down drag out fight over the family film — specifically whether or not it could be released on VOD before its window of theatrical exclusivity closed. Fast forward to last week and the two companies have finally settled their differences. From here on out films will only have to stay in theaters for three consecutive weekends (aka 17 days) before being released on VOD, down from the full 90 days demanded pre-pandemic.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has kneecapped the global economy, it has proven exceptionally lucrative for Amazon. Last week, the e-commerce giant announced that it had doubled its quarterly profits over last year, jumping from $2.6 billion in sales to a whopping $5.2 billion. Apple did pretty well for themselves too.

A whole bunch of EVgo chargers are coming to a parking lot near you in the next five years. The company announced this week that it is partnering with GM to effectively triple the number of charging stations it offers — jumping from a mere 800 locations today up to 3,500 by 2025.

Universal Studios’ theme park in Japan tentatively reopened to visitors on June 8th, but that doesn’t mean its upcoming Super Nintendo World section will be open on time. NHK says company has indefinitely delayed the Nintendo area’s debut after originally intending to fling the gates open in late July. It won’t surprise you to hear as to why: Mario and crew are likely to increase the number of visitors, and that’s not what Universal wants while it’s already trying to keep attendance down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company is only allowing park visitors from the surrounding Kansai region and has effectively cut visitor numbers in half.

NBCUniversal parent company Comcast revealed in an earnings call that Super Nintendo World will be part of the Epic Universe theme park in Orlando. That’s scheduled to open in 2023, and it’s not yet clear whether Super Nintendo World will open then. In any case, it’ll be at least three years before it debuts in Florida.

Executives didn’t offer too many details about Orlando’s Super Nintendo World (or the California version) on Thursday’s call, but it’ll surely ape the Osaka incarnation. That “life-size, living video game” will include a real-life Mario Kart ride, another called Yoshi’s Adventures, food outlets, merchandise and, of course, games.

Comcast clearly has high hopes for the attraction. An executive described it as having potentially similar drawing power to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, which “drove incremental attendance in our parks of about 2 million people.”

As promised, Universal Studios Japan is on track to open its Super Nintendo World park this summer ahead of the Olympic Games. Now it’s teasing the new area with a mostly-CG music video and song made by Galantis with Charlie XCX.

If you were hoping for a glimpse inside the new area or some idea of what rides are in store, you won’t see them. Instead there’s a dance sequence and some dreamy segments showing how players go from hanging out at home with their Switch to enjoying an in-real-life experience.

However, on a website that launched along with the video, it did mention the real-life Mario Kart experience we’d heard about, and says that families will be able to travel the park on Yoshi’s back. Also, there’s a “power up band” teased that appears to be your wearable park pass, while you traverse the world and encounter Mario-style blocks in real life.

As it says at the end “Play in real world this summer.”

Holoride designed its technology to adapt to the movements of a vehicle to prevent motion sickness, which means the experience itself (even its sound effects!) will match every turn, stop and acceleration. When we tried the company’s Marvel VR experience in the backseat of an Audi at CES earlier this year, our virtual spaceship sped up and veered left when the E-Tron did. That was an exclusive demo for attendees, though — this time, anybody can reserve a seat online or line up on site for the Bride of Frankenstein experience.

Nils Wollny, Holoride CEO and co-founder, said “riders will be able to experience first-hand what the future of in-vehicle entertainment looks like through the lens of the compelling story of the Bride of Frankenstein.” The partnership will also give Ford a chance to gather customer feedback for immersive in-car entertainment experiences. Their Bride of Frankenstein rides will take place between 12PM and 8PM Pacific Time on October 14th to 16th, October 28th to 30th and November 4th to 9th.
