This is an unusual focus for Tesla when it tends to serve the US first, but it makes sense given the realities of Canadian driving. It’s a more sparsely populated country with longer stretches between cities than you see stateside. Electric car drivers not only face a dearth of chargers for cross-Canada trips, they may have to spend hours of extra time waiting to recharge. The V3 stations could both provide vital coverage for long trips and ensure that Tesla drivers less time parked.

The timing of the news is convenient. VW’s Electrify Canada (a sibling to Electrify America) just opened its first fast EV charging station as part of a plan to install 32 sites in the four most populous provinces (Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia). Tesla is effectively one-upping its rival by not only outlining a larger network, but promising that most of those stations will recharge at a breakneck pace. Not that this is much help for Americans Tesla owners. For once, they’ll have to be more patient than their northern brethren.

In line with founder Elon Musk’s promise to take Supercharger stations off the grid, the Las Vegas site will rely on a combination of solar and battery power. A solar array will power the site during the day, and Powerpacks will provide energy at night. The station will contain a total of 24 stalls and 15 Wall Connectors.

The new V3 site will be capable of serving 1,500 owners per day — a significant increase in capacity given that the city’s Supercharger stations see about 6,500 sessions on average per month. While Sin City is still behind cities like San Diego and Los Angeles in electric vehicle ownership, a 2016 ChargePoint report listed it as the fastest growing city for sales. And with Tesla’s Gigafactory 1 in Reno, it’s clear that Nevada will play a huge role in the automaker’s future.

After some testing with early access customers, the eight stalls at the factory are open to all Tesla owners and support charging speeds up of 250kW. That means owners of long-range Model 3 (which supports charging at that speed) can add 180 miles to their vehicle in 15 minutes.

Owners of the Model S will gain 130 miles in 125 minutes while the Model X will get 115 miles in the same time frame.

Tesla’s Supercharging network sets it apart from other automakers building electric vehicles. The network has made it possible for owners of Tesla vehicles to drive long distances without having to navigate multiple charging systems.

Volkswagen is working on the same type of scenario with its Electrify America subsidiary. But, it has a long ways to go to match Tesla’s charging network breadth.

Tesla’s V3 Supercharging will be rolling out globally this year.
