CBS All Access will become Paramount+ early next year as ViacomCBS attempts to wrangle all of its series under a single streaming banner. The rebrand signals the culmination of an on-again, off-again relationship between Viacom and CBS, both of which operated proprietary streaming platforms before finally merging in 2019 in a $30 billion deal. Viacom had BET+, Showtime and Pluto TV, plus a deal with Netflix for Nickelodeon shows, while CBS had CBS All Access.

United at last, ViacomCBS has been beefing up CBS All Access this past year, adding a ton of Viacom content to the platform, including shows from Comedy Central, MTV, VH1, BET and Nickelodeon. Now, it’ll all be housed under Paramount+.

Console Wars, the documentary based on the 2014 non-fiction novel of the same name, will premiere on CBS All Access on September 23rd, CBS Interactive announced on Friday. The company also shared a new trailer for the doc.

Console Wars details the battle between Nintendo and Sega in the 90s, focusing mostly on the Genesis and SNES era. The source material is somewhat controversial for including fictionalized dialogue — albeit between people who took part in the events the book recounts. Judging from the trailer, that’s something the documentary improves on with many of the same individuals — including former Sega of America CEO Tom Kalinske — who feature prominently in the book giving on-the-record interviews. Blake J. Harris, the author of Console Wars, helped co-direct the documentary, with Seth Rogen serving as one of its executive producers.

If this launches on Monday, it will be the first Apple TV+ content bundle. Just yesterday, we learned that Apple is also considering an “Apple One” subscription bundle, which would package services like Apple Music and Apple TV+, plus add-ons like Apple Arcade, Apple News+ and iCloud storage.

Apple bundling its own services makes sense, but offering a bundle with outside services like CBS All Access and Showtime enters a different territory. It could bring tons of content to Apple TV+ subscribers, who may find the shows and movies on Apple’s streaming service to be a bit lacking.

If it goes through, the all-stock deal will bring together Viacom’s MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central, as well as its Paramount film and TV studio, and CBS’s broadcast network and Showtime premium network. The combined CBS and Viacom would be valued at roughly $30 billion, and Viacom shareholders would receive 0.59625 CBS shares for each share they own.

Bob Bakish, Viakom’s current chief executive, would likely become CEO of the merged companies, and CBS Acting Chief Executive Joe Ianniello is expected to run CBS-branded assets. Shari Redstone, who controls both CBS and Viacom along with her father through National Amusements Inc., is positioned to become chairman of the board for the combined companies.

The merger is far from a surprise. The media giants originally split in 2006, but rumors that the companies might reunite began circulating by 2016, and they’ve continued over the years. While today’s agreement is significant, it’s too soon to say for sure if the deal will go through.

The service doesn’t yet have pricing, but it will be ad-free. It should launch on Android and iOS as well as “other streaming devices” (read: set-top boxes and smart TVs). BET’s free channel on Pluto TV will stick around, though it’s clearly focused on back catalog material.

There is a risk that BET+ will add to the subscription fatigue affecting some internet viewers. However, BET Networks President Scott Mills is betting that his channel’s service can buck that trend. African Americans are more likely to adopt streaming services than other demographics, he said, and BET+ is catering to an “underserved audience.” In other words, Mills is counting on having a uniquely strong following that others are unlikely to match.
