If you are playing at home, you’ll notice some big differences. It now sports a revamped interface that serves as a central hub for launching games, streaming to social sites, checking for driver updates and other common tasks. You can even browse the web, and the software is context-sensitive to ensure you’re getting relevant controls.

Other additions include dynamic resolution scaling (aka Radeon Boost) to keep frame rates high, wider hardware support for Image Sharpening and Anti-Lag as well as integer scaling that gives your older games a crisp look on modern displays. This isn’t so much a classic driver update as it is an expansion of what AMD’s GPUs can do — it’s likely worth a go if there’s an eligible Radeon sitting inside your machine.

NVIDIA is quick to acknowledge that the benefits aren’t quite as dramatic at higher resolutions (where you run into bottlenecks), but you should still see improvements at 4K. Keep in mind that the company is also using its latest graphics tech mated to a recent Core i9 processor — you might not see such dramatic results if your system is more modest.

There are, however, some improvements that are more universal. There’s now a beta Ultra-Low Latency mode for DirectX 9 and DirectX 11 games that only submits image frames just in time for rendering, delivering high responsiveness without forcing you to lower graphics settings or buy new hardware. You’ll see the most benefit in GPU-dependent games where frame rates are between 60FPS to 100FPS, but it could be vital for any reflex-sensitive titles.

Other tweaks? There’s now sharper integer-based graphics scaling for classic 2D and pixel art games (think emulators or retro-looking titles like Hotline Miami) if you have an RTX or GTX 16-series card. There’s also a new Freestyle filter, Sharpen, that’s both more effective than the current Detail filter and half as demanding on your GPU. This latest driver also brings 30-bit color support to all of NVIDIA’s hardware lineup, support for the newest G-Sync monitors and optimized settings for more games, including Wolfenstein: Youngblood and Bloodstained. You’ll likely want to install these drivers, then, no matter what exact GPU you have or what you intend to play.

The pricing would be the selling point. The RTX 2070 Super will reportedly start at $499 when it arrives on July 9th, or $100 less than the Founder’s Edition of the plain 2070 when it surfaced in 2018. The RTX 2060 Super would cost more than the plain 2060 at $399, but you might be willing to pay that $50 premium due to the memory — it’s expected to come with 8GB of video RAM instead of the 2060’s usual 6GB. That could make it the best value of the bunch if you’re more interested in avoiding memory bottlenecks than boosting frame rates.

Don’t worry, enthusiasts, there’s supposed to be a high-end chip as well. The RTX 2080 Super would boast more cores and higher memory bandwidth than the regular 2080, all the while costing a familiar $699. You may have to wait a little while longer, though, as the rumor has this Super variant shipping on July 23rd.

If the leak is accurate, you’ll hear about all the new GPUs on July 2nd, or just days before AMD’s new Radeons hit shelves. NVIDIA clearly wants to spoil its rival’s party, then. Not that there’s much room o complain. Competition is forcing NVIDIA to step up its game, and that’s good news if you’re determined to get the fastest possible graphics hardware for your PC.

The GPU is also defined by how well it works in groups. Infinity Fabric Link tech offers a speedy (84GB/s) connection with other GPUs. You can spring for a Radeon Pro Vega II Duo that stuffs two GPUs into one enclosure, and the Mac Pro supports two of those. If you absolutely need as much graphical grunt as possible, this might fit the bill. There’s also an “all-new” PCIe connector that enables both 500W of power capacity in addition to integrating Thunderbolt 3 connectors.

AMD hasn’t outlined pricing, although that’s not shocking when the Mac Pro won’t be ready until the fall. You can expect it to cost much more than the $699 Radeon VII, at least. When there’s twice as much memory, Infinity Fabric support and Mac Pro-specific customization, the Pro Vega II is aimed squarely at creatives who can justify spending lavish amounts on GPUs. Whatever they pay up front might pay for itself through faster turnaround times on their projects.

Other software is affected. NVIDIA’s tool for running games on 3D TVs, 3DTV Play, is now bundled with the Release 418 drivers for free. However, the 3D Vision Video Player app will only be available (again for free) through the end of 2019.

The company didn’t explain the decision to pull 3D Vision (we’ve asked for comment). However, it’s likely down to adoption and resources. Stereoscopic 3D glasses have lost their luster in recent years, particularly in an era of more affordable VR headsets. There’s not much point to supporting technology that relatively few people use, especially when NVIDIA recently launched a new graphics architecture with ray tracing and other distinctive features that need their own support.
