Earlier this year, we learned that Spotify was teaming up with DC Comics and Warner Bros. to create a lineup of exclusive, narrative audio podcasts featuring DC characters like Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. Today, Spotify announced the first series: Batman Unburied. The audio drama, led by David Goyer, will explore the darker side of Bruce Wayne’s psyche. 

“We’ll be using the unique advantages of audio to dig into the more nightmarish members of the Dark Knight’s Rogues Gallery,” Goyer said in a statement. Goyer’s previous work includes The Dark Knight trilogy, Man of Steel, Sandman, Foundation and more.

For the time being, AT&T has reportedly decided against selling its Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment gaming division to another company. According to Bloomberg, the telecom concluded the unit was too valuable to ditch, even if a sale would have helped the company with its $165 billion debt load. 

When news of the potential sale first broke, CNBC reported the sale of the division could have netted AT&T as much as $4 billion. Several prominent video game publishers were reportedly interested, including Microsoft, Take-Two, EA and Activision Blizzard. Bloomberg reports two main factors likely led to AT&T’s decision to scrap the sale.

Warner Bros. has been teasing at least one new superhero game for a while, and it’s finally ready to show what it’s been working on… well, almost. Rocksteady Studios has posted a teaser for a Suicide Squad game announcement on August 22nd at DC’s virtual FanDome event. There’s not much to see, although the crosshairs on Superman suggests the villains-doing-good team might have at least one unusual opponent this time around.

It’s big news for fans of the DC universe, but it’s particularly important for fans of Rocksteady’s work. The company hasn’t released a conventional title since Batman: Arkham Knight in 2015, and its last published project was 2016’s Arkham VR. Expectations are high for Suicide Squad, especially as it might be the studio’s first project for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Notably, Warner Bros. told Variety it doesn’t have a plan to release Tenet in China yet. Behind North America, the country is the second-largest movie market globally. When theaters in China first started reopening, the country’s Film Administration (CFA) said they couldn’t show movies longer than two hours. However, according to Variety, some cinemas recently started playing older films like Inception that are longer than two hours, so that policy may no longer apply.     

If Warner Bros. goes through with the release of Tenet, it will be the first major movie to hit theaters since the coronavirus pandemic shut down most cinemas in March. With the pandemic still a major issue in the US, a lot could change between now and September, making even a limited release untenable. Whatever happens, don’t expect you’ll be able to watch the movie online anytime soon. Unless something drastically changes, Nolan’s latest won’t skip theaters for a video on demand or streaming premiere. 

Warner Bros. and Nolan still harbor hopes of bringing it to theaters this year, however. “We will share a new 2020 release date imminently for Tenet, Christopher Nolan’s wholly original and mind-blowing feature,” the studio’s chairman Toby Emmerich told Variety in a statement. “We are not treating Tenet like a traditional global day-and-date release, and our upcoming marketing and distribution plans will reflect that.”

Warner Bros. will be flexible with its rollout plans, Variety reported, ultimately meaning that people in other countries could see the movie before the studio releases it domestically. There may even be staggered release dates within the US, starting in select cities where officials have deemed it enough safe to allow theaters to reopen. In any case, we’ll find out more about the release plans soon enough.

So what’s next for the big event space in Fortnite? If you thought it would be another concert or DJ set, guess again. Starting tonight at 8 PM ET and repeating at the top of every hour, the Party Royale space will show a trailer for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming time-travel movie Tenet. It’s not quite an IMAX screen, but with most theaters still shut down it’s an interesting form of a “Big screen” premiere event.

If you don’t catch it at first, Epic Games says the presentation will repeat until 8 PM ET tomorrow night.

Against all the odds, the mythical “Snyder Cut” of Justice League will finally get its day in the sun. You’ll able to watch it in 2021, provided you shell out money to subscribe to HBO Max. On Wednesday, WarnerMedia said it plans to release Zack Snyder’s director’s cut of the 2017 superhero movie on its soon-to-launch streaming service next year.

The Snyder Cut has been a fan obsession since before Justice League came out. The story goes that before Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly creator Joss Whedon came on to reshoot the project, Snyder, who previously directed 300 and Man of Steel, put together a darker and more somber edit of the film than the one that eventually made its way to theaters. Shortly after Justice League came out, fans started to flood social media using the hashtag #ReleaseTheSnyderCut to get Warner to meet their wishes. At one point, even some of the movie’s stars, including Gal Gadot and Ben Affleck, lent online support to the trend. 

But that’s not all. Keighley, who is acting as Summer Game Fest curator, revealed a string of major publishers who are taking part, including 2K, Activision, Bandai Namco, Bethesda, Blizzard, Bungie, CD Projekt Red, Digital Extremes, Electronic Arts, Square Enix, Private Division, Riot Games, Steam and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. And that’s just the first wave of confirmed participants.

There’ll be plenty of news and surprises on the cards, along with in-game events. Some, including Steam and Xbox, will offer playable demos and trials. The summer edition of the Steam Game Festival will take place June 9th-14th, while Keighley and iam8bit are putting together a developer showcase of upcoming games. Details about other publishers’ events and others who are taking part will arrive in the coming weeks. An initial schedule will be added to the Summer Game Fest website on Tuesday.

WarnerMedia finally confirmed that HBO Max will launch on May 27th. For months, the company has been promising the streaming service would be ready this May, but it hadn’t revealed a specific date.

When it arrives, HBO Max will deliver 10,000 hours of content, including a handful of launch day premieres. There’s Love Life, a comedy starring Anna Kendrick; On the Record, a Sundance documentary; Legendary, a series about an underground ballroom dance competition; Craftopia, hosted by YouTube’s LaurDIY; the new Looney Tunes Cartoons; and Sesame Workshop’s The Not Too Late Show.

NVIDIA’s GeForce Now is still bleeding game support despite recent additions. The GPU maker has revealed that all titles from Warner Bros., Xbox Game Studios, Codemasters and Klei will lose support for the game streaming service on April 24th. The news came tucked into a post meant to highlight support from big names like Bandai Namco, Bungie, Epic Games and Ubisoft — clearly, some creators are happier than others.

The service has lost games from multiple publishers since its early February launch, including 2K Games, Activision Blizzard and Bethesda. More games have come to the cloud gaming service at the same time, but it’s evident that there isn’t broad-based industry support. It isn’t surprising that Microsoft’s Xbox Game Studios left, at least. Project xCloud will be a direct competitor to GeForce Now when it’s ready — Microsoft doesn’t have as much incentive to stick with NVIDIA’s platform as other game creators.
