There still aren’t too many Windows 10 PCs or laptops on the market with ARM-based processors, but folks who do have those machines will soon be able to run 64-bit x64 apps on them. Microsoft says it will at last roll out 64x emulation to Windows Insider testers in November.

Windows 10 has been able to emulate 32-bit x86 apps on ARM for a while, along with native 32-bit and 64-bit apps. Support for x64 emulation will allow those systems to run a far wider selection of software. As such, ARM-based Windows PCs and laptops will have far improved utility.

There’s a clipping masks tool that will allow you to capture certain parts of your drawing and move them to another layer or layer group.
There’s a new brush management tool as well. You’ll be able to pick which Pixel brushes to display or hide and make a custom set of brushes with the ones you use the most often. Fresco now has a preview tool for Photoshop, Pixel and Eraser brushes, which shows you the size and shape of the brush when you touch the screen. You can activate that though the Brushes menu, which is under the Input options in App Settings.

That’s not to say that the interface doesn’t change at all when you enter into a “tablet posture,” but it’s more subtle. The new build increases spacing between taskbar icons, collapses the taskbar search bar into a single icon, opens the touch keyboard automatically for text fields and switches File Explorer to a touch optimized layout.

To be clear re: Build 18970 and the updated tablet experience… Tablet Mode hasn’t changed and is still there and does exactly what it did before. The change in 18970 is regarding switching into the tablet posture.

— Brandon LeBlanc (@brandonleblanc) August 29, 2019

The idea is to provide a similar experience in either mode, possibly so that 2-in-1 or convertible buyers don’t get confused by the much different-looking tablet interface. “This new experience allows users entering tablet posture to stay in the familiar desktop experience without interruption,” Microsoft wrote in the Windows blog.

Users who know and love the existing tablet mode — a holdover from the Windows 8 era — will still be able to use it, but that might change down the road. The fact that it’s no longer offered automatically means that Microsoft might phase it out in favor of the more desktop-like 2-in-1 and convertible mode.

It could also have something to do with Microsoft’s upcoming October 2nd Surface-focused event. The software giant will reportedly launch Core OS, a stripped down Windows 10 OS designed for touch-centric devices and wearables.

It could be that Windows 10 as it exists now will be reserved for business and power users, hence the more desktop-like interface in the latest Insider build. Meanwhile, Core OS would have a more visual, touch-oriented interface like the existing tablet mode. That would become the operating system of choice for the next generation of consumer-oriented devices, including a rumored dual-screen PC that might be revealed at the Surface event.

As part of the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview Build (build 18965, if you’re counting), Microsoft is testing a new setting that gives Windows users more explicit control over whether their apps automatically launch when they restart their PC. Outside of the latest Preview Build, the option that controls app restart behaviour is bundled together with a menu item related to setting up a new device. Understandably, if you’re unaware that the two settings are tied together, it can seem like Windows isn’t capable of launching some apps automatically. By default, Microsoft says the new setting is disabled. Insiders can activate it by navigating to the “Sign-in options” section of the Accounts settings menu. Alternatively, it’s possible to access the toggle by typing “restart apps” into either Windows 10’s Start menu or settings search bar.

As usual, not all the features Microsoft showcases in a Preview Build will make their way to a final release of Windows 10. However, should the company decide to include this one, it’ll be available when Microsoft launches its “20H1” update at the start of next year. That’s the same update where Microsoft plans to add a built-in Linux kernel to Windows 10.

Like any new update, Build 18965 includes its share of bug fixes and stability improvements. One bug Microsoft says it has addressed involved an instance in which some apps weren’t able to execute background tasks. The company has also fixed a bug that caused the taskbar to sometimes hide when launching Windows’ touch keyboard. Build 18965 is currently available to Windows Insiders in the fast ring, a classification Microsoft uses to describe individuals who have volunteered to test the company’s newest features first, regardless of potential bugs.

It’s no surprise that the overhauled Edge, as things stand, apes the design of Google Chrome — it relies on the same Chromium open source base. It’s integrated with several Microsoft services, including Windows Defender SmartScreen (to detect phishing and malware), Bing and Microsoft News.

Edge also supports Chrome extensions and those from Microsoft’s own extensions store. You’ll also be able to sync your favorites across preview builds (cross-platform password and browser history sync will arrive later). Thankfully, there’s a dark mode too.

Microsoft is focusing on the fundamentals right now, so there’s limited language support, for instance. Spellcheck and media casting are also unavailable for the time being. The preview builds are currently only available on Windows 10. Support for other versions of Windows, Mac, and other platforms (including Xbox One) will arrive later.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is working with Google to help push Chromium forward. It’s already contributed to the project in several areas, including accessibility, touch and scrolling. It plans to work with the “larger Chromium open source community to create better web compatibility for our customers and less fragmentation of the web for all web developers.”
